|
|
Hi,
Does anyone know if it is possible for a national of a country with visa exemption to acquire a temp. visitor's visa from within Japan when the period of stay covered by the former is over? my bf has been here visting/studying;he now wants to find work but only has 1 month left on temp visitor permit. the mofa website says:
"...the waiver of visa requirements are not applicable in the case of stays exceeding the period of time stipulated in each arrangement. In such cases, it is necessary for foreigners to obtain a visa."
but I wondered if anyone had 1st/2nd hand experience...thank you very much |

A visa is NOT required for UK or Irish passport holders who wish to enter Japan for a period of six months or less for the following purposes:
Sightseeing, recreation, amateur sports, visiting relatives, inspection tour, participation in unpaid lectures or meetings, study, attending a conference, business contact or other similar activities. Journalists travelling to Japan for a short business trip do not require visas.
On arrival at immigration in Japan, such a passport would be stamped for a stay of 90 days. This period of stay may be extended for a further 90 days upon application to an immigration office once inside Japan, but approval is at their discretion. |

Japan has visa arrangements with over 60 countries.
Is he from one of these?

Good luck |

Thanks Johnny,
He is from the U.K. (as am I) but has already had the 2nd 90 day period stamp; I am just a bit confused as to whether it is possible to apply for a temp. visitor visa to further extend the period of stay after this six month period or whether he will need to leave and come back again. |

I think that the visa they are referring to is one that permits a long stay, like the Humanities visa or a Cultural visa. I think he will most likely have to leave the country, and it then bcomes an issue of whether they will let him back in or not.
The only way to be really sure is to ask Immigration directly- unfortunately in my experience, if you can even get through they are often really vague about answering questions on the phone. |

Anything is possible. It's Japan, the land of laws beginning with "In principle..." [1] However, given that a temp tourist visa is meant to be just that: temporary, it's unlikely he'll get anything other than a request to, "Please leave now, thank you."
If he qualifies for another visa type then go for it, and that's where I'd be looking first because that's where you're more likely to have success.
[1] Which is why can do things like run into someone that had been in Japan five years on a working holiday visa. |

That's what I thought but wasn't sure - thanks.

This is the main concern - any idea how likely it is that someone in this situation would get turned away or is it luck of the draw? He still has a return ticket to the U.K. and has been here visiting family rather than sightseeing so far.

He is applying for jobs but with only 4 weeks to go it's getting a little hairy , and the whole Nova business is an additional worry. As for other visas, cultural seems the best option but I can't find much information on how to find a school/individual who will act as a sponsor.
Thanks for your replies. |
