Watching the Asian Cup game from my home in Korea, it was interesting to see the passion of the Indonesian football (soccer) fans at the stadium in Jakarta.

Indonesia won the match 2-1 against Bahrein, and it was pleasing to see the Indonesians do well in a sport other than their fame in badminton.

Interesting to scan the fans at the soccer stadium in Jakarta to see that almost no women were in attendance! Is this something to do with culture or religion (Islam) or a combination of both?

In Korea, the opposite is true - at any soccer match, there are almost as many women as men - but the Korean fans all look like 'nerds' - not really like 'real' soccer fans. You just see a bunch of Koreans wearing those unflattering black framed glasses that are so popular in the land of the 'rising sun' go ""ooh, ooh, ahh, ahh, Hanguk/Korea" - but you don't really feel a sense of passion - the behaviour is more
'robotic' and scripted from the Korean fans.....

In Indonesia, on the other hand, you could really feel the passion and involvement from the Indonesian fans, most of whom appeared to be young men between the ages of 16-30.

Ghost, while I am not a great fan of soccer I have made a few observations about the soccer fans of Indonesia. Generally, Indonesian soccer is not considered 'cool' or 'with it' by the middle class and they mainly prefer European or English soccer. Women love it too with the Beckhams and Zidanes strutting their butts on the world stage. But if it is local stuff only men from the kampung tend to get into it. And the fans can get quite wild too, someone said it made an English crowd seem like a church picnic. So not a safe place for a woman or child.

...but who saw the South Korea-Saudi Arabia fixture in Jakarta yesterday? The lights went out after 85 minutes!!!

After the disturbances by fans the previous day, I guess that's the last time Indonesia hosts an international sports event. Shame they wasted all that money renovating the stadium...
