|

Hi
I was just talking with someone who insisted that about a year ago an ad in the New York Times offered $80,000 US dollars, plus accomodation and meals and everything else, for a 6 month program to teach slang, idioms, figures of speech, etc. to businessmen in Japan. They were offering this with no teaching experience or qualifications. The guy was very defensive because he really believed that these jobs are ubiquititous in Japan so it was hard to get other info about the job from him.
I told him that it was very strange and sounded like a scam (which really just made him angry!), though I'm not sure if he would have had to pay for anything to get over there.
Anyway, so I was wondering if any of you know of some program that brings people over to teach slang or the like, expenses paid, for perhaps $80,000 yen? Like maybe a post-college discover Japan kind of thing?
Or am I completely out of the loop and there really are entities that will pay somone with no experience or teaching credential this kind of cash for slang?
And if they existed, there must be some legal problem with the work visa, no? |

My wife told me these kind of jobs were relatively common in Japan during the bubble.
I'm surprised to see one know however. |

I've never seen anything even close to that. That would be about 9 million yen for 6 months? Ridiculous. |

You can't find many top university jobs at that salary.
The person who wrote that article is terribly misinformed, but I want the job! |

Ask your friend to find the details for that job and post them here. |

Right, I tried to explain the real job market in Japan to this guy, but he wouldn't have it. He so defensive about the job I couldn't ask anything more about it really...like why, for heaven's sake, it was posted in the NY Times. I've never seen ESL jobs in the NY Times unless they are local. |
