Any ideas for the most culturally insensitive lesson? I thought about playing "killing an Arab"by the Cure to my arab students. I didn't as it would lead to my immediate dismissal. Still if ever wanted to get fired I know how to go about it. |

A shame, too, because it's a damn good song, and of course it's not even about killing Arabs... Still, I cringe when I listen to it, just imagining the reactions it'd get.

I believe it is an allusion to Camus' "The Stranger."
If I remember my music trivia correctly, back in the mid-80s Robert Smith cut his beautiful mop of hair in protest because the song's title had drawn criticism--he wanted to show that there was in fact no anti-Arab sentiment in the band.

It is about The Stranger. The song isn't really racial at all, in the book the guy doesn't get killed because he's an Arab. My English teacher in high school actually played the song in class for us. Granted, this was in the US, not in a Middle Eastern country. |
