I've tried the search and got mostly unrelated posts, so here's my question: where in the world is there a decent break within reach of feasible employment teaching english?
Ideally this would be walking distance or short drive for early morning sessions-although I guess even somewhere with the option of a decent weekend session further afield would be pretty sweet. Anywhere in South East Asia, Spain, France or Latin America would be favourite!
Don't be shy people
Many thanks |

Peru. Most people live on the coast. If you go to Trujillo, the beach is pretty close by. |

Phuket, but there isn't much of a break half the year. But - that means there is for half a year and you are relatively close to Bali for surfing there. |

Cheers guys-I've surfed a bit in Peru and it's on the short-list (I think you responded to my other post on the south america forum so you'll know I'm thinking of heading back down there eventually)
That's good news about Phuket-I'll be in Thailand as of tomorrow so will come and check it out when I've finished my CELTA.
Which half of the year is it good though (hopefully the next half...)?
Also-any schools to recommend applying to down there?
Cheers again |

Best surf is May to September.
Lots of schools and lots of different types of work depending on qualifications, experience and flexibility. Better to deal with once on site - no one hires from abroad. |

The "locals only" mentality is rearing its ugly head, so I will not reveal secret spots on this forum!
However- my opinion is that you should
1) check some surf-atlases such as this one:
http://www.wannasurf.com/spot/index.html
2) pick a spot
3) do your research into regular teaching work in the general area
4) go for it!
good luck with the CELTA course! You are doing the correct thing in my opinion. |

When looking for work, it might not be a good idea to let the employer know you are interested in surfing. At the school where I work, the language department has had some major problems because the school hired surfers who happened to do a little teaching, rather than teachers who happened to do a little surfing. |

If you're elegible for a Working Holiday Visa for Australia, it may be possible to find a job teaching English and surf on the same day.
Check it out here:
http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/working-holiday/index.htm
I'm making nearly $40 AUD/hr, but I had already been teaching English for 9 years in Europe before I got here earlier this year. I'm also here on a Spouse Visa, so am here "permanently".
There are a couple of teachers at the school I teach at on WHVs, but we're in Melbourne--not exactly surfing country...
Have fun! |

The surf in Phuket sucks, even in the good season....it is not a surfing destination. |

Harry,
Anywhere along the cte Atlantique here in France. Superb surf (so i'm told and judging by the Rip Curl international surf comp and Oxbow headquarters just next door i think it's true).
If you look at places along the coast, towns like Bayonne, Biarritz and St Jean de Luz you'll find some interesting stuff. For teaching posts, look for private schools, but better still check out the www.anpe.fr job centre for France. You can click on theregion and type in a search word "english". You'll find loads of offers although most are part time short contracts. If you're willing to supplement your teaching with a bit of bar work or English pub stuff you'll have a ball.
Let us know where you end up! oh and good luck with the CELTA |

HIGH FIVE FOR BOARDSPORTS.
I'm keen on this post but replace "surfing" with "snowboarding". I'm all about the teaching from Monday through Friday and snowboarding on Saturday and Sunday. I did that in Austria for two years and and will now give it a go just south of Nagano Prefecture here in Japan.

Why wait for Saturday and Sunday? When I lived in Niigata in Japan, my local resort was about 20 or 25 minutes away, so in addition to Saturday and Sunday snowboarding, I did two or three nighters per week (finished teaching at 4pm).

That would be my ideal, but I'm in Shizuoka Prefecture and the resorts of southern Nagano Prefecture aren't close enough to let me dip into them for a weekday nighter. Not planning on buying a car, so have to rely on the public transport.
But what you mentioned is DEFINITELY the ideal. Indeed, why wait for Saturday and Sunday?
It's all about BOARD, not BORED.
