Years ago when Greenwich Village NYC was my holiday mecca I used to peruse the Village Voice for freebies, the poor college student that I was.
Today, here in DF, I am again searching out the freebies and the interesting oddball cultural activities most people would not consider visiting.

At the Hidalgo Metro Station, there is a cultural art center, the Jose Marti that offers free chess playing for 36 persons from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. MWF. It takes place outside adjacent to the cultural center under a canopy. Its first come first served.
They also offer incredibly cheap art classes, such as paper making for only 300 pesos for two months of Saturday afternoons, as well as origami for the same amount.

At the Museo de Caricatura on Donceles street one block from the Cathedral in the Zocalo you can take drawing lessons for only 25 pesos per hour. The teacher will walk you through the basics. Efrain is excellent.

I am sure that other transplanted DFers have their own favorite activities offered by the city or universities that they would recommend others to partake.

Lets hear it from you. Not just beer joints and karaoke singing but the whole full gamut of sports and culture. :?: :?:  :D :D

For those into poetry and book readings, El Pendulo (bookstore/cafe mix) in Zona Rosa and Condesa provides for a laid back environment. There are also lots of free publications to pick up there to point you in the direction of other artistic endeavours.

Tiempo Libre is a small booklet published weekly that lists hundreds of activities in the arts, workshops, and classes of every stripe in the city. You can find the booklet at many newsstands and at Sanborn's.

Fantasas Miguel (Felix Cuevas, near Insurgentes in Col. Del Valle) run Craft sessions. I think they are free, but not sure.

Personally I have another free pastime!! Wink

For a truely unusual activity in the DF area. On any Sunday morning, visit the Pasajuego de Balbuena and take in a game of Pelota Mixteca. The players are mostly aging, mostly Oaxacans or sons of Oaxacans who have moved to the city, and LOVE to tell outsiders about their game.

The exact address is

Cecilio Robelo s/n
casi esquina con Avenida Congreso de Unin
Colonia El Parque
Delegacion Venustiano Carranza

And don't forget to take in the Frida Kahlo exhibit which opened a week ago and closes August 19th.
