This is a repost of the OP in a thread from GP. I thought it was someone important enough to let you all know about as it effects many of us living here. Please sign the petition or E-Mail the USPS.
If you know another way to get mail from the US by boat please let us know!

I am writing in this forum to ask for support in signing a petition to bring back the international surface mail service (ground shipping, the 4-12 week service that is cheaper) from the USPS.
On May 14th, the US post office dropped the international surface mail and all economy mail services.
I have created a petition, you can go here http://www.petitiononline.com/USPSISM/petition.html to sign it, after some time I will be sending the petition directly to the USPS. I need a lot of signatures!
Please sign it and pass it to everyone you know, this service elimination I have found is going to kill the book industry and really hurt those of us who are expats that have items sent to us from back home.
I am hoping to get them to turn their decision around, I know this is going to take some time and also going to affect a lot of people. Sign now and let's make some noise!
Thank you in advance for your support. |
Just so you know: I got a package from home today via sea mail. It was 18lbs and cost about $41. With the new rates the package will cost over $81 but will, of course, get here in ten days. The price for speed trade-off is a horrible one. |

welcome to what australia has with japan.
australia post doesn:t have sea mail options to japan so even tiny packages that get sent to me or i send to australia are always costing more in postage than the value of the things that are inside |

I'm not sure about sending from Oz to Japan (although I'd be really surprised if what you said is true) but from Japan you can use surface mail, which is sea mail by another name. I sent a big box back to Oz just the other week for about 4000 yen.

The problem is US ----> Japan. The USPS nixed the service and forgot to let anyone know about it to give people time to protest it. |
