Hi,
My partner and I, both British, qualified and experienced TEFL teachers, are looking at the possibilities of relocating to Canada for a year.
Visa wise we're looking at a 12-month working visa through Bunac. However, before we go through that process we want to know whether a Canadian school would actually employ us as teachers. We're both CELTA qualified and have 3 years TEFL experience, well 6 years for my partner.
Ideally we want to go to the BC area, either Vancouver or Whistler.
Also, what kind of salaries would we likely earn? And how stable are jobs out there?
Any advice is appreciated.

I went to Scotland with BUNAC. Honestly, what little I know about Canada is that the visa is a big hurdle, so if you're legal, that'll help a lot. I don't think that jobs pay too well compared to other things that you can do in Canada and I've heard that you'll have to work a couple jobs. However, working at a school, primary or secondary might solve your problems. For specific salaries, try a search, as this has been discussed before. YOu probably won't make much, but you'll have a good experience and will make more in Canada, than say China. |

It'll be difficult getting a work visa (unless you can qualify for a year abroad programme from having recently graduated from university in the UK- I knew someone who was in Toronto from the UK doing exactly that).
The two places you mentioned are where virtually all 20 to 30 something year olds from the rest of the country want to go (example: about half of all the people I am still in contact with from my childhood in Toronto have moved out there- a lot of them are struggling to find work- any work), so work conditions are competitive there. Toronto is like the New York City of Canada, Vacouver is like the LA (in fact it's a sister city of LA, maybe because it has the 2nd largest film industry in North America - obviously LA has the first), Calgary is like Houston. |

Obviously, once you have a visa you will qualify for work along with a myriad of other TESL Certificate owners. Most schools take on extra staff in the spring and lay them off in the fall, so keeping your job over the first winter is a big deal. Most people have to do a bit of sub work before they get invited to FT work.
Salaries are higher than those at Safeway, for example, but they won't get you far on a 20-30 hour per week schedule, if you are lucky enough to get that. The truth is, there is a glut of qualified teachers now so we don't have the clout of other industries. There is always a fresh grad willing to take your spot if you don't like what they're paying. |
