I've just been offered job teaching English at Inner Mongolia University of Nationalities in Tongliao. I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about either the school or the city. I don't have any specific questions, I'm just trying to get a feel for it.
Thanks |

I met a student from there during Spring Festival. Don't know much about the school or the town but his English was fantastic, so I'd assume they have a fairly high standard and at least one good English teacher. |

Tongliao used to be a part of Jilin province before the autonomous region was created. As such, locals still consider themselves Northeasterners. When I was teaching in Hohhot, a majority of my students were from Tongliao so it has a huge Mongolian population. Here in Changchun I have some Chinese students from there as well.
Male Mongolians from Tongliao are definitely people I wouldn't want to mess with. They, being Northeasterners and Mongolians, are quite easily provoked.
From what I've been told, the cost of living is VERY low in Tongliao. I believe 5 RMB can get you to most places. But it should be noted that apparently cabs in Tongliao don't have meters and are just regular cars and you can haggle prices with the drivers.
You should keep in mind that March-June are the duststorm months and they are not fun one bit at all. |
