Hey TELF'ers
I know Mexico is a huge country and thus should have more TELF teachers in it. But, what made you choose Mexico over say Panama, Guatamala, Nicaragua, or Costa Rica?
I am choosing Costa Rica because I have been several times and know a family there. But what are your reasons?

Mexico chose me!
My wife is Mexican. In my experience that is the reason for many people. I would be interested to know why people actually chose Mexico, except for it's proximity to the US (I'm British, btw).
See the thread on "leaving Mexico" for more views on what people really think of the country. |

Mexico also chose me...but not because of a human partner (I haven't gone that crazy yet! ) Instead, it was because of my dog! (hehehe ) During teacher's college there was a large international job fair. I applied to schools in Latin America only becuase I'd lived there previously (MX and HND) and wanted to return. Because of my dog and the fact that most schools provided shared accomadations, the dog was an issue. But if I was going, so was she. Last school I interviewed with had no issue with her and so, they offered me the job. And thus, I am here, enjoying a city that is more majestic than I ever would have imagined, in a country that I always knew had lots to offer.

I first came to Mexico when I was 17 on a high school exchange program. That was in Merida and it got me hooked on Latin America. In college I studied abroad as well, this time in Chile. After graduation, I signed on to a English classes for Spanish classes exchange in Ecuador. I later went to Japan to teach English. And I wanted to get back to a Spanish speaking country. Mexico was the obvious choice, most of my universities studies focus on South America, the Southern Cone and the Andean Countries. So I felt I needed to learn more about Mexico. I was very lucky to get a great job, which later changed my life plans and here I am, still here. |

Honestly, because Mexico is next to the US. A flight on short notice from many places in the US to DF is usually under $300 dollars. The same in reverse.
I wanted to get to know the southern part of North America. Also, there are so many Mexicans living in the US I wanted to visit their country and get to know it. The differences between Mexican and Chicano culture (There are many) and learn some Spanish. |

but when I will go within the next couple of years, it will be to assist the rural folk of Mexico, many of whom I teach here in North Carolina. I have found my students from southern Mexico to have some of the finest family morals I have yet to come across. I have no delusions; I know the hardships and dichotomies present. Regardless, I am looking forward to making my contribution. Be well, ya'll. |
