Hi all! I am thinking about going to Japan. I have been in ESL/EFL for about seven years now and just finished two years in the Saudi Arabia. I have an offer from Westgate but don't know if it is possible to live on Japan when I can only budget 20,000 yen per week to live on (after rent and health insurance). I would appreciate any the thoughts from Westerners on working with Westgate and trying to live on such a budget somewhere in the Kanto area. |

if you're on the basic starting salary of 250,000 yen you'll be taking home around 230,000 if you're paying the health/unemployment and pension (which you should be).
Your rent will be around 45,000 a month for the burbs, possibly less for the countryside. Could be up to 80,000 for a nice place in a big city. Bills are usually around 10 to 20,000 a month depending on your needs, that's including cell phone, internet, water, gas and electricity.
Anyway that leaves you with way more than 20,000 a week to play with unless you're sending a large chunk home.
Living in Japan on an ESL salary can be very comfortable. |
