I am going to go to Tokyo in a month and I am just wondering where to go and what the cost might be. I am am looking for a Nikon DSLR or a Cannon DSLR.
Basically I want a Nikon D70 or D80
Or a Cannon Rebel Digital.
I would love any help with prices or location or both.
Thank in advance.

While we're speaking of cameras - I was thinking about buying a nice camcorder. Should I be looking at buying it in America or when I get to Japan? I'm thinking of the Sony HDR-FX1. It's around 3,600$ in the states. Is there a way to buy it in Japan w/out having all the menus be in Japanese? Also, will there be much of a price difference? |

Yes you have to buy the 'overseas model' not much of a price difference but you might not get the big discounts either. |

You might want to search the archives for digital cameras.
I was just looking through them last night and think that there were at least a handful of useful posts (sorry, I'm a little tired). This site, Kakaku, was recommended by someone here or at gaijinpot for pricing cameras and other electronics.
Also Digital Photography Review is a useful resource and the different American, European, and Japanese model names are often listed in reviews.
I'm not in Tokyo (or Japan yet), so I can't recommend anything specific beyond Akihabara. |

I have a digital rebel (which I am crazy about) and my friend has a nikon, they both work really good. I dont know which one is best, they both take excellent pictures but she edits hers more so hers will look better in the end. BUY A NICE CAMERA, It is SOOO worth it!
They are the same price here as America, if you go to Hard Off (haha, the used electronic store) you can get them cheaper...but I have no clue if they are different here. You can always buy them online...
oh, and if you want to see how my canon works you can check out my website.
I saw a Canon for about $400. (converted into Dollars), you can probably get a older model for less. That is the same as it was when I left Americaa 6 months ago. I saw this one at Yamada Denki, they have cheap electronics.
about the camcorder, I would buy it in America because the menus will probably be in Japanese and if you are going to pay that much you might as well be able to read them. I would say that the price is the same unless you take into account the exchange rate, then you may save a few dollars.... |

My el-cheapo Fuji digi-cam bought in December has a choice between English and Japanese menus. D/load the manual and you're good to go.
At the shop ask if the camera has English menus, if they say no check yourself because half the time the staff at these places don't know what they're talking about. |

Many of the decent digital cameras will give you a choice of languages in the menu selection.
All in all, I have found prices of digital cameras a bit cheaper in Canada than here in Japan, though the selection is better in Japan. |

My Pentax, bought at Yodobashi Camera in Shinjuku, has a choice of languages for the menu and I was also given the English manual. Yodobashi Camera or Bic Camera are good because you get points depending on how much you spend which you can then use to get accessories etc. for free. My mini-tripod, SD card and camera case were all got for free with points. |
