My name is Joshua Lasater I am a 23 year old Hispanic American male. I hold a BA in Political Science from Texas Tech University and a MBA with a concentration in Management from The University of Texas at Tyler. I am looking to teach English to individuals or business professionals. I have lived in Texas since I was two and as such I am a native English speaker. I also speak a small amount of Spanish. In addition, I have been a volunteer ESL Teacher for 2 months. I cannot leave until January 2008 but I am beginning to look for jobs in Costa Rica. How important is it for me to obtain the ESL certificate via CELTA?
Thanks for any replies. |

If you're a native speaker you can get work without a TESOL or CELTA certification. Just say that you're an American without elaborating it any further unless they ask.
Getting a certificate or not kind of depends on your long-term plans. I got my TESOL certificate because I wanted the experience (meeting new people and the teaching practice), and I plan on working as an English teacher in different countries over the next years. If you are planning to work as an ESL teacher just over the course of 2007 it might not be worth it.
