used to be the English Reader on Leones, near providencia but it shut down a couple of months ago and the website doesn't work any more which suggests that it's not just a change of location...it was really, really expensive (as all books in chile are) but had far and away the best selection of english language books in chile. anyone have any news of the place? |

I arrived one day (September? December?) as cardboard boxes were being carried out of the store and loaded onto a truck. The owner said that he would be selling online. |

Close to the metro Pedro de Valdivia - on the side of Providencia (traffic going down towards downtown) and walking towards Manuel Montt, is an English Bookstore that has been around for years. Its in a kind of a "patio" where there are also a couple of pubs - one used to be the "phone box pub", but has now changed ownership and I dont know what its new name is, and the other is a vegetarian pub/restaurant called "El Patio". Between the two is the bookstore - which mainly sells second-hand English books. When you are done reading, they also accept the book back as part payment towards your next purchase. |

Ok, so the best ENGLISH bookstore in Valparaso is CUMMINGS 1, located right at Plaza Anibal Pinto (near CinZano, Caf Riquet, Caf del Poeta, Kabala) at the foot of subida Cummings. Not surprisingly, it is at 1 Cummings.
Not only are there books in English, but also French, German, Portuguese and Spanish! You can check out the website (sorry, no online ordering) for CUMMINGS 1. There is a wide range of subjects: Poetry, Travel, Philosophy, History, Fiction (even SCI-FI), and even used books.
Staff speak ENGLISH, GERMAN, and SPANISH (not at the same time).
I highly recommend it. |
