Hola!

I am thinking of Japan to work for a year. I live in China. I have a Chinese wife. Can I take her to Japan?

She loses face easily and has yellow skin and black hair. She doesn't mind Japanese people but her mother probably hates them (invading her village and killing her friends but that was 60 years ago).

If any of you have foreign wives, please share.

SENOR

I think he was being humorous, which probably didn't come across right on the forum. Internet has that downfall.

I don't think you and your wife will have any problems. She will probably be included in culture events. The town I was in had a few events and the Philipinas and Brazilians and me(only western) would get together and make food from our countries or demonstrate a song or game. It was a lot of fun. When I was in Japan, Japanese were very interested in China. There was even a Chinese language class at the community center.

As for visa, she'll probably just get a spouse visa from you. I think it will be a great experience for both of you. *Plus she can help you with all that kanji (Chinese characters) Wink

Lynn, a spouse visa is for foreigners married to Japanese nationals. If his wife is Chinese she will receive a dependents visa, which is different- as his dependent spouse she can work part time on a dependents visa.

For what its worth despite the difficult history between the two countries, I dont think its as bad as it is between Japan and North Korea at the moment. Generally Chinese are well received in Japan but they get a bad press because of foreign crime statistics etc.

Dont forget there are many Japanese men who have Korean or 'Asian' wives in Japan as well- more that Caucasian men and Japanese women.

No, the Senor's post wasn't strange, coming from him anyway.

Senor, before I came to China, I had several Chinese friends who had been living and working or studying in Japan. For the most part, their experiences were quite positive. Some things they were not fond of - for example the subtle type of racism, especially having an Asian face but not being Japanese - but they all got through those things. To my knowledge, none of them have returned to China or seem in a hurry to do so.

Another positive for your wife is that Chinese can learn Japanese fairly rapidly - one friend in only about one year's time, studied Japanese, passed the Japanese Language Proficiency Exam Level 1, and had an exam score to get into university higher than those of her friends who got into Kyoto University which is maybe Japan's second best uni. She nows works for NTT Docomo - the largest mobile phone service provider in the country.

One negative for you, and I suggest you read through some old post here on the Japan forum, is that it will be difficult for you to get the type of job that will afford you the type of lifestyle you live in China - initially anyway. Start-up costs are high in Japan. But don't take my word as the final say.

Also, as I understand it, Dave, the proprietor of this page, married a Thai lady and later took her to Japan as a dependent where he taught for a year of so. Their child was born there. Write him and ask.
