|
|
Hello all,
I have recently been offered a position at ADM. I am a single woman in my early 30s and was rather surprised to be placed in a men's college. (I said I was willing to go anywhere and was happy to go to smaller city so this made it all the more surprising.)
Are there many female teachers at ADM? Are there any issues I should be aware of?
Also, will I definitely have to subsidise my accommodation in AD? I have a reasonably well-paid tenured position at the moment (but we're experiencing a downturn - have made it through 4 rounds of redundancies so far...) so the move would have to be worthwhile financially. I am worried about the cost of living. Is it a shocker in the capital? I'm not a big drinker! |

All colleges, male or female, have male and female teachers and some colleges have co-ed courses. Someone from AD will have to talk about the other questions but most people are on holiday now and probably not reading the forums. |

it would be highly unlikely HCT would place you in accomodation that required you to have to pay out of your own pocket. |

beep,
No problem with being at the Men's college - or at least there haven't been any loud complaints about that branch here lately. All the faculties are mixed, not only sexually, but different nationalities. With no taxes and housing provided, you should be able to save much of your salary. (though most people find the first year a bit expensive getting your place set up... the housing allowance covers the necessities quite well, but the little luxuries one may want... like a car) Abu Dhabi is cheaper than Dubai.
But, I would think long and hard about giving up a tenured position if you feel at all confident about being able to keep it - presuming that you want to keep it. The expat life is not for everyone and if you decide it is not for you and want to return home - how long would it take to find another tenured position - or would it even be possible?

beep, could I ask where you are working currently?
I only ask because I am very surprised that you are in your early 30s and already have a tenured position.
I only know such stuff about the US, and there in universities it takes a very long time to get tenure, usually a couple of decades at the very least of teaching at the same place. |

Huh? No, five to six years is the normal lead time to come up for tenure in the US.
There is no such thing as job security in the Middle East. I would personally never, ever give up a tenured position in the West for a job in the UAE. |

Hi Trapezius,
I have a tenured position in New Zealand - it was a case of very good timing! |

Sorry my info might be wrong in that case.

Yeah exactly, you would be CRAAAAAZY to do that, beep. But if you have tenure, don't you have the freedom to take a sabbatical and take positions in other countries for a year or two? At least for US professors I know they can do that. |

So far so good. Stick to your guns. They tried to give me a substandard place but I refused. Now I got a pool and gym in my building. Great for workouts.
Couple of creepy types round here but mostly I avoid them. At least you know who they are and what they are up to.
Anybody know about any baseball teams?
Want to get back into slugging. |

Hey, redsoxman, how about helping out the youth and coaching at the Abu Dhabi Little League? It sounds that you're just the one to give some guidance to the little ones. Sorry, no information about teams in AD, but I hear a roumour that they have some in Dubai.

RSM:
I can put you in touch with the AD Little League.
Unfortunately, no idea about big league.... Not really sure it exists. |

There's quite an active league in Dubai - as far as I know, they still play at the diamonds behind the Metropolitan Hotel on Sh. Zayed Road, although this may have changed because of construction.
I imagine if you're in Dubai on the weekend and wander down to the "field" you'll probably find quite a few people practicing and be able to find out more about teams in Abu Dhabi.
They have a big tournament every year (again, used to be at the above mentioned fields) and teams came from Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, etc. Both men and womens teams competed.
Good luck |
