Hi,
I am interested in going to Dubai to teach or become a consultant for teachers. I am Australian and have been teaching now for six years. I have attended many professional development courses such as; The Gifted and Talented student, Teaching outside the textbook and Interactive whiteboard. I have a Bachelor of Teaching and the students I have worked with have achieved some of the highest results in the state for 6 years straight (Basic Skills Test - this is a statewide exam).
I was wondering if you could answer my questions below:
I would like to know if I could find a job in Dubai or Sharjah? Which one is better to live in?
I also would like to know what to expect for a salary?
How much I would expect to spend monthly? I am married with a 1 and half year old son.
Some schools offer accomodation as part of the salary. Is that only one room? Or do they take into account how many people in your family?
How much would I expect to pay for Nursery for my son? What are the nursery hours?
What are the teaching hours?
Would any school be employing now?
Can you reccomend any school to apply in?
Thank you for your assistance |

So are you hoping to work as a teacher or a consultant for teachers? I would guess that the latter would be a harder job to find (though not necessarily out of the question).

Dubai, for the most part. You'd also likely find more employment opportunities.

I can't speak to the teacher consultant position, but a K-12 teacher can expect anywhere from 8000 dirhams/month-13,000 dirhams/month.

That depends. Do you want a car? You'll likely have to pay for your electric and water bills, groceries can run extremely cheap to extremely expensive. I guess it depends on your taste. If you're going to seek out brands that you would get at home, you'll pay more for it. I would guess that a family of 3 would spend an average of 1000/month on grocery. If your housing is provided rather than being given an allowance, at least you can count on not having to dip into you salary to make up any additional rent. Rent is VERY expensive. How much you spend often comes down to what you want vs. what you need. The cars, the mobiles, calls home(not cheap), nights out (which I doubt you'll have many of w/ the baby)...I think this is where people lose their money (aside from rent).

Good employers take this into consideration, giving you family accommodation. It will vary from place to place, so some employers who provide accommodation for families give large flats while others provide villas (less common-esp in Dubai). Your bigger concern is whether or not they give you accommodation or money. If money, are those funds sufficient enough to find accommodation w/ the rising rents?

I don't know. I believe they'll give up to a certain amount for education (day care), and this varies from school to school.

Not many, I'm afraid. I would watch the TES Online. Some schools are already starting to advertise for August 2008, and a few are looking for January 2008.

I'm not sure what age you'll be teaching, but there are lots of decent schools to work for. To name a few: Dubai English Speaking School, Jumeirah Primary, Jumeirah College, Rashid School for Boys and Latifah School for Girls, Dubai College...You should do a search on Al Ghad (there have been many conversations about it on this board). It's a much higher paying gig, and there would be a need for more 'adminsitrative' roles in which you might truly be doing consulting. There are actually so many schools, however, I can't tell you that these are the only good gigs. It would be easier if you came back w/ some potential employers, and I can offer what I know. |
