When I arrived I took out a two-year contract with Vodafone, now Soft Bank, thinking I would be here for a long time, but I'll be leaving this October, only one year and five months into the contract.
If I cancel early will I have to pay a lot of cancelation fees, like in the UK? If so, what would you recommend I do?
Thanks |

Because each person's contract / situation is a little different, why don't you call Softbank and ask them? They have English customer service (support). Just go to the website and get the contact info. That'll help you FAR more than posting on Dave's and getting second-hand information that may or may not be accurate. |

Did you not ask about the cancelation fee when you signed the contract ?
I too have a 2 yr contract with Softbank. It will cost me 10,000 to cancel.......hardly breaking the bank. Yours will likely be the same figure. |

Thanks. 10,000 is not much at all. |

I was in the same position. I signed on for 2 years in March 2006 and cancelled when I left in April 2007. I had to pay a 10000 cancellation fee. I've since been told that those who signed under Softbank get no cancellation fee. But if when you signed on it was still Vodafone - ba-bow!!
I just gave them my credit card details at the Softbank store at airport before I flew out and they charged it about 4 weeks later. |

You can cancel at any store? That's good to know. I can take it travelling with me for the three weeks after I leave my town. |

Yup. Any store. I signed on at Yodobashi Camera in Umeda and cancelled at Kansai Airport. In fact, they recommend cancelling at the airport just to make life easier for you.
You can check on their website to see if there's a store at the airport you're leaving from. |
