So I`m between jobs and was told by immigration that I have three months to either secure a new job or prove that I can earn at least 250,000 yen/month as a self-supporting English teacher. I have leads on jobs in other countries and am not terribly worried should I not be able to meet this requirement for teaching privates. I also have housing and a modest budget.

I feel a bit wobbly in my efforts at pulling this together, although who wouldn`t. For example, I`m not clear on insurance and tax requirements, nor am I entirely clear on the immigration rules for my work visa. The woman I spoke to at the immigration office (via phone) was extremely abrupt and had a pet phrase of, Like I already told you ... (which is my pet peeve), so I went away from that phone call feeling a bit uncertain about visa stuff.

And about the alien registration card, am I correct in understanding that as long as I have a valid work visa I can register in my new city? Without a current employer?

If any of this has been covered in previous threads, please help me with links. My search efforts only produce a blank screen.

Thanks!

How in the world did immigration find out you are unemployeed? Yes you can register in another city! But why do so until you are employeed? You need to get your prioties in order! First you need to get a job then worry about insurance and registration!

I have a disgruntled employer who insists that she has full control over my work visa and wants to cancel it as soon as I leave her school. Of course she can`t really do this, but it goes to show you that I`m dealing with a very hostile person and therefore want to be as informed as possible. When I tried to book a two-week rental, I was asked specific questions about my stay and told that they`ll want to see my work visa and alien card. My employer also says she has the power to cancel my alien card. Crazy stuff, but it`s got me worried and feeling cautious.

Thanks for your kind words. Cheered me right up.

There is nothing your employer can do about your work visa or alien card. They are bluffing.
