so I am currently setting up interviews right now but have not yet gone to one. is there some general expectations I can have?

like what will the school be most focused on?
what do they want want to hear in terms of what I can provide or want?
dress code (it's humid as hell but should I dress up? if so, wear what?)

as for full time work, a lot of the ad's i'm looking at have really low full time hours (around 20). is this the best I can hope for or should i keep looking if i want to make more money?

alternatively, should i just get a low hours, full-time work and supplement the rest of my time with tutoring gigs?

that you're not a flake who is going to bail out on Taiwan after 2 months because you can hack it, as far as what you want, you'll just be given what they want, you have no bargaining power to speak of if you're new

dependant on the school, i would check out the school before hand and see what the teachers are wearing, whatever they are wearing is probably good for you to wear to the interview....however, you can never go wrong with a polo shirt, and shorts, that seems to be the Taiwanese uniform

only some schools offer higher hours, and these are usually chain schools, not to get into a big debate about chain schools, but do some reading on the board first if you're thinking about going this route, yes they offer more hours, but there are other things to consider with chains (ex. KoJen, HESS, Jr. Jet, KNS, etc...)

this is an option many people consider, since the pay for private tutoring is usually significantly higher per hour than what a new teacher would make in the bushiban, so you can get the ARC from your school, but keep some free time to run your own game on the side

Hello Big Wally,

When you say to get the ARC from the school and run your own game on the side, is that legal? I know you need to change your ARC everytime you get a new employer, but can you do that with private tutoring?

thanks,

Penny

Technically yes, it is illegal. You are receiving payment for services, and not paying taxes on it.

Realistically though, how is anyone ever going to figure out that a Chinese person, and a foreigner having coffee together are actually having a tutoring session where money is being exchanged.

Or, as is the case with several friends, the foreign affairs police aren't going to follow you into someones private residence where the tutoring session is taking place.

It just doesn't happen, and to be honest, no one really cares. I have friends who have had tutors set up by staff at our school. Even our laoban approached a teacher to tutor a friends child. Obviously, private tutoring doesn't go on your ARC, only your full/part time gig(s) would be on there.

The major illegality that many foreign teachers get caught up in, and IS watched far more closely by FA Police is working for Kindergartens. This is not worth the risk, as being caught doing this will often get you a deportation. Although, many people swear by kindy as a viable, and lucrative source of additional income.
