Should the school week be extended to Saturdays to recuperate lost days of class? |
Yes, it's a fair option given the gravity of the flu crisis. |

I don't like it, but I accept the decision. |

No, it's not a good idea because the students will react badly. |

No, teachers shouldn't have to work on Saturdays if it's not included in our contract. |

In the wake of the H1N1 virus scare, the private secondary school where I work is trying to recuperate lost school days. One way they hope to achieve this is by requiring us teachers to work on Saturdays beginning next weekend.
My 9th graders will graduate in about a month and they're already crawling up the walls. On top of that, their study trips to the USA have been canceled, along with their "prom." These 15-year-olds will not be happy campers upon their return to classes. And as a result, a six-day workweek feels to me like low-level torture (not quite waterboarding, but perhaps along the lines of being forced to listen to screamo at high volume).
I realize that the SEP requires a minimum number of school days, so clearly there must be some sort of accommodation to meet federal guidelines. I am curious, however, if other schools are also introducing Saturday classes. If so, what is your opinion on this decision? If not, what has your school elected to do instead?
Looking forward to your responses. Thanks! |

Work on Saturdays in a colegio
NO WAY!
I know how these spoiled fresa kids act during the best of times, so this would be a nightmare.
One of the reasons to work teaching kids is that one does not work on Saturdays. |

I do some standing around work on Saturdays, and only for 2 hours but teaching on a Saturday? Even more pointless than teaching on a Friday.
I think the prepa I teach at are going to extend to school year by a week or so. |

Yes it is a good idea. As long as teachers get paid good for it! |
