Hello, firstly thanks to everyone... reading your messages has been really helpful.

i've got an interview this week with AEON and so i need to come up with a 30 minute lesson plan and demonstrate 5 minutes of it...i dont have previous efl experience so i was wondering if i could get some feedback on my idea for the demo..

i was thinking that after a relevant vocabulary recap i would do a fruit and veg memory game, the "i went to the shop and i bought..." one and would bring in picture cards with pics of fruit on them, each student would take it in turns to pick a card and then say the sentence then the name of the fruit on the card and then the next student would say that one and their own etc...

the demo is meant to be aimed at beginners so do you think this is too complicated?? any feedback would be very much appreciated...sorry if this message sounds a bit jumbled...

oh also i'm female but dont have a suit...can i get away with a skirt and a shirt because i dont really want to spend the money on a suit??

First off, good luck to you with the interview, Tanya! I'm sure they will be lucky to have you as a teacher. As for the skirt and blouse, sounds good! Regarding your lesson plan, why don't you write up a lesson plan with stated objectives, how you will achieve them and how you will be able to assess the learning outcomes. This will show your prospective employers you mean business. As for the actual 5-minute demonstration, how about setting up a vocabulary game where you have one student sit in front of the white board and you write a vocabulary word behind them. The other students then describe this item until the student in the hot seat identifies it. Have them do several words and then a new student has a go. How does that sound, Tanya? Finally, be sure to let us know how it goes for you!
Enjoy,
s

Of course, I would advise wearing a suit. However I wouldn't advise buying one for the interview. You could go out and buy one, tuck in the tags, go to the interview and then return the suit. That or you could borrow one. If that doesn't work you could get one at a used clothing shop. At any rate, the OP hasn't responded, so whatever.

Hi, thanks so much for your suggestions! i wrote up my lesson plan like you suggested and i think it makes it clear and concise so fingers crossed...
i think it probably would be better to wear a suit but i havent had much time this week so i think ill just try and look as smart as i can minus a suit...if they ask i'll make it clear i would be happy to buy some if i get the job or something. are you currently working in Japan? if so whereabouts? thanks again for your help...i'll let you know how it goes

Howdy, Tanya! I am at an international high school in Tokyo. Remember how image oriented it is here. Plus, lot's of folks chasing few positions these days means you really need to be on it to land that job. By not wearing a suit you are at a distinct disadvantage, as sad as that may seem. Also, I wouldn't mention anything about getting some fancy duds if you get the job. Instead, exude confidence and professionalism. Again, they will be lucky to have you. When is the interview?

ahh thanks! i'm just gonna try my hardest tomorrow and if i dont get a job then at least i'll have experience of interviews and maybe i can prepare better next time (clothing wise)...my interview is tomorrow morning so i guess i'll find out soon! you're so lucky to be in Tokyo, i would love to be there right now Smile

and 'cool teacher': the general consensus that i have gathered is that i think a suit is the best option if it's possible and if not then be as smart as you can! are you going to the same interview tomorrow?

Oh sorry Tanyas! Confused I didnt reply but no I am not going to the interview because I am in Japan now!!!!!!!! Very Happy
I did work for GEOS though and they are similar to AEON and used to be the same company once upon a time or so I am told. Wink I remember the interview we were all expected to wear smart clothes and I think some of those with no suit did not get chosen Sad So I think the advice about smart as you can is good I was hoping someone from AEON could come and say definately if you should wear a suit because that would be better than just us two who dont know saying "Wear a suit" "No, dont wear a suit" "No do wear a suit but dont buy one" "No buy a suit defo!" "Yes, thats what I said" or we look like those two muppets in the muppet show in the theatre giving opinions but no way to back it up!!!! Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Anywya, I hope all went well Tanyas and please tell us any good news and maybe even some good advice for the next ones!!!!

cHeers! Cool

Most of the women at the interview were wearing suits, some with and some without jackets.

It was that hot in the hotel that I don't think the interviewers minded. Apparently the air conditioning was broken, although that doesn't explain why the heating was on Rolling Eyes

Hey! well i got through the group interview stage and went back the next day for a personal interview but still waiting to hear any more...don't really know how i did...

oh and for anyone who reads this in the future i think most people were in a suit but she did say that she understood some poeple may not have one if they havent graduated yet or something but you were expected to have a few if selected for the position.

hopefully i'll be in Japan soon too...i'll let you know when i know (apparently within two weeks but hopefully sooner because i dont like being patient)

They emailed me to say neither of my references had replied! I gave my old manager a call and apparently AEON sent quite a large email asking a lot of questions which she just hadn't got around to answering yet Sad

They have given me until Tuesday to try and sort it all out, I guess it's a good sign that they are actually checking my references anyway.
