Thought this was interesting.
Of the original 7 man-made wonders (Great Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Temple of Artemis, Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Mausoleum of Maussollos, Colossus of Rhodes and the Lighthouse of Alexandria) only the Pyramid of Giza still exists.

Since 2001, a contest has been running to name the "New 7 Wonders of the World". The Pyramid of Giza was put on the list automatically (there was a bit of a brouhaha over that a while back).
They announced the winning "7 New Wonders" today...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070707/ap_on_re_eu/new_seven_wonders
"The Great Wall of China, Rome's Colosseum, India's Taj Mahal and three architectural marvels from Latin America were among the new seven wonders of the world chosen in a global poll released on Saturday.
Jordan's Petra was the seventh winner. Peru's Machu Picchu, Brazil's Statue of Christ Redeemer and Mexico's Chichen Itza pyramid also made the cut." |

Students here have been talking about this for awhile and encouraging people to vote for Chichen Itza, as has the federal government. Good for Mexico on this one!
Not sure about the Christ statue as a Wonder, considering the company it now stands with. |

The ones I voted for are on the list, except instead of Petra and the Big Jesus, I voted for Easter Island and Stonehenge. |

Shame about Stonehenge, it used to be a local attraction for me... although I once told an American visitor, who asked if it was worth making the journey, "Not really, it's just a pile of stones".
Also, not sure about the Christ in Ro, it's big, has a great view, but isn't it relatively modern? In which case, unlike those big ancient structures, it wouldn't be a wonder that it ever got built. |

I voted a couple of weeks ago, at the urging of Mexican TV!
When I got to the website I was actually very surprised and even confused by the choices. There seemed two entirely different leagues going on. Chichen Ista, Stonehenge and some other very old sites, kind of in league with the original 7 wonders. And then several very modern structures like the Statue of Liberty and the Sydney Opera House?? Certainly both great feats of construction and architecture but one has to wonder how they could be compared to the Great Wall. Like Phil said, not really a wonder. |

They've started a new poll, the Seven Natural Wonders. But maybe they should have held a few off the 7 Wonders and started a Modern Wonders instead. I'd include the Taj Mahal as modern too. Not exactly built yesterday, but not exactly ancient either. I got so much hate mail and death threats for saying that on my blog though, so watch out! |

I figure anything built after about 1825 would have used at least some machinery and "modern methods". The Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty, and Big Jesus are impressive but just can't be compared to the Great Wall of China, Easter Island, or anything else made by hands-only methods. I think the Taj Mahal would fit that the latter category. |
