I have no experience teaching in Guilin but one friend comes from there.
It is one of the more beautiful locations in China.
I would like to go there myself and teach so if anyone does know how it is now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of there fellow FT's.

Libo is a beautiful place, Guizhou is a poor province so I imagine the opportunities for a FT is limited.
I've been to both places as a tourist.
I have seen only 3 listings in the past on the ESL job boards.
I'm not concerned about salary so those crappy 3000 RMB a month deals are to be expected.
However, I would like to hear if the working conditions are good or not. |

I don't mean to be disparagingt but the question I have on my lips i8s: why would anyone select a backwater like Guizhou over the rest of all provinces?
My own answer would be: it's not overrun by other FTs, and the climate is milder than almost anywhere due to the province's mountainous nature.
But it's poorer than most, with fewer, far fewer positions to be filled by FTs, in fewer cities.
I remember a couple of years ago some jobs were advertised that paid 6000, but apparently pay scales have been reduced as the offer of labour gives the employers more leverage. |

Good question, the answer to this is my wife is from there. Her family does very well in a number of businesses.
Her mother just bought her a 166 Square meter home for her future, her other sister runs the Hospital there.
We were planning on going to go stay there for awhile, we even thought about opening our own training school. We both teach in Beijing.
I also need a break from Beijing.
I would like to learn the family business too, she was thinking of buying a McDonalds there. We would run it if this happened.

Your new career will pay more than the majority of ESL positions in China. 
To your question, I have never worked in Guizhou, but have worked in a backwater area. If you are working in a public school don't expect much. The facilities will be basic and the facilities they do have will be worn out and old. Expect big class. In most cases you will be the first foreign teacher they have had and in some cases you will be the first foreigner they have ever seen.
People will say hello to you constantly and when walking down the street expect to be stared at. You will sort of be like a celebrity, be warned though that will start to get to you after a while.
On a positive note, the students will be more respectful and attentive. However huge classes and a mixed level of English makes teaching a proper class impossible.
It's possible to make a decent salary, since there will be less foreign teachers there will be less competition. You will have a lot of opportunities to supplement your income with part time work. Many times I would walk down the street and some principal of a kindergarten, middle school etc would ask if I was interested in teaching at his school.
For me working in a area like that was great for a year, but your situation is a little different, you are considering moving there on a permanent basis. Seems like the wife's family are doing well there so you can expect a comfortable life.
In a sentence it's a great eye opening experience but living there long term, you would need to consider very carefully. |

I guess the dreaded McDonald's "McJob's" is now a worthy job position, boy has times really changed.
I guess being in the family (owners) though is the incentive here to flip the burgers in the back.
I'm not sure if she will invest in a McDonald's I only offered to help run it.
I do know it will be the first one in Guiyang so it should do very well.
I'm not sure if this idea will pan out because the initial investment might be too steep , who knows.
I might make it a place to learn English as a sales gimmick

I can just imagine the look on the customers' faces when they see a laowai taking their order. |

Guiytang may byu now have its McDonaldses though last time I passed through it had none. Let me add that the development in this province is very, very uneven, with most going to the capital.
Apart from Guiyang, you might consider setting up home in Huangguoshu near Anshun or in the latter itself because these are popular tourist destinations. The whole rest of the provi9nce is rural. |
