Can anyone give me an estimate of what the salary range is at Zayed for someone with a masters and 12 years teaching experience, almost all of it pre-masters? What are some of the other benefits?
I have searched their website and there is nothing updated here on Dave's about salaries at Zayed since 2005.
Thanks. |

How about an educated guess? Don't worry, I won't hold you to it. |

I heard that Zayed pays a bit less than HCT, but not sure what HCT would pay, so this does help a bit.
Anyone know abut benefits at Zayed? Any current or recent employees? |

Although I don't know, it's quite likely that salaries at ZU haven't increased since 2005 so any info you have from then may well still be applicable.
If you look back through earlier threads, you'll find a link I posted to HCT salaries (which now have an extra 6% bonus added on); if ZU salaries are indeed similar/a bit lower, then you'll have at least a ballpark estimate. |

Gordon... these two places have pretty much the same pay and benefit package. Both are Ministry of Higher Education contracts...

13000 sounds about right. 300 Dirhams a month increase last year. This year's hasn't been announced yet TTBOMK. |

At ZU there has been a 10% increase in salaries due to the fact that around 120 faculty are leaving...more for the taking and less for the leaving...comments welcome as always...but consider a place that has to handle processing 120 people to leave...and then replacing them...4 provosts down and counting as well...only 8 years in the making...good luck to those who plan to start in the fall... |

I ended up turning down their job interview. I couldn't really see myself taking my family to Dubai at this point or perhaps even to Abu Dhabi. Thanks to those who responded to my question. |

Questions from a prospective candidate:
Apart from salary issues, why are so many people leaving? Some reasonable answers please. One place I'm thinking about has a big griper swiping at everyone. Just the facts, puhleese.
I have had offers from a couple of places - some of which seem to have staffing/management problems. Is this an issue at Zayed?
Can anyone give me information on the housing situation? I hear that teachers are placed all over town or have to find their own place. What are the options? |

That figure of 120, which I hadn't heard before and am slightly suspicious of, is from all colleges and departments at both campuses - not just English teachers. I've spoken to several of the departing English teachers and they're making the move for a variety of personal reasons, not because of anything particular in the ZU setup. The reasons include higher salaries (CNA in Qatar), some are returning to homes or previous haunts, some retiring. There do seem to be an unusal number of people leaving this year, but I don't think it has much to do with conditions at ZU.
Housing is still assigned by the university - it is scattered around a bit, but new teachers are put together or with other faculty, not isolated. After a year, you get a chance to find a place for yourself if you want, but you're not obliged to. |

Welcome back YG... good to see you here when we need a balanced factual update.
Yes takeorleave, it will be a bit difficult the first semester getting everyone settled in, but ZU is one of the more professional establishments with one of the best pay packages, so I expect that by mid-year, things will be fine.

When a 120 people leave an institution in the Gulf that means damage control comes out. The previous message did not say anything about any program in particular. There is nothing at all suspicious about this number. One who in fact claims that it is, needs to be wondered about. Again someone is in need of damage control. The last provost did not even stay throughout this last academic year - left in Jan. '07. This means numerous people were either not renewed/left because there was yet another change in the top down nature of the situation and did not want to endure new management out to justify its duty. Plain and simple - take or leave is as balanced as it gets - it studies this site and has and will for some time to come. Professional is a relative term - it is more of a "paraprofessional" situation at best. Take or leave - says it all. |

I am curious as to why a change of provost... which is upper level management... would matter. That position used to change with great regularity at HCT and the only effect was the following year with the new hires. If he was an Aussie... we got lots of new Aussies. If he was American, we got a few more of them. But, no one was ever fired to make space.
I never spoke to any of them... and they never had anything to do with us TEFL teachers down in the trenches.
So, I'm wondering what difference it makes if that management level changes regularly. From what I saw, they spent most of their time talking to each other.
