Hello everyone,
I have been flipping through some of the forums and have found the information to be very informative.
Just wondering about cost of living in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico...i.e. rent, food prices, utilities, etc.
Also, reading that this city has little to be desired, I was also wondering about living in a neighbouring community. Would cost of living be lower? Is transportation between communities possible? Or would a car be necessary?
Please let me know of your experiences and knowledge in these regards.
Many thanks

I studied in Chiapa de Corzo, which is abot a 20 minute commute, and a lot nicer than Tuxtla. But you can also easily live in Berriozabal, Copoya, or El Jobo. But those last communities are very small, and I dont know how isolated you would feel. I think that Chiapa de Corzo would be your best bet if you want a small town feel, yet want to work in the big city. |

I did the same as Lisa1968 and stayed in Chiapa de Corzo for 6 weeks while I took my TEFL certification with the Dunham Institute. I enjoyed the town very much, very relaxed and laid back right on the river. I did have trouble finding good eateries and settled for the cocina economica nearest the city museum at the entrance to the city square. No other places did it for me.
Tuxtla itself was a wash. Not enough architectural excitement, nor was the city laid out well. However, the zoo is the best in the world. |

I live up a canyon just before the samll town of San Fernando. It's about 8 degrees (C) cooler than Tuxtla, cleaner and very beautiful. There are cheap buses and collectivos to Tuxtla. Chiapa de Corzo is nice but it's very hot there like Tuxtla. |
