Who do you think of if I say "Elvis"?
I went into a second hand music shop to buy some ELvis but there were no CDs of Mr Presley anywhere only Elvis Costello. Is Elvis Costelo more popular in Japan than the BIG BOPPER?!!? Shocked I also notice that "Country Roads" is very popular in Japan. I also know that there is a band called "Big in Japan". I think this was a joke way of saying that some bands become very popular here but nowhere else. Deep Purple for example. Confused Do you know any other examples?

The Big Bopper? The one that died in the plane crash with Buddy Holly?

I'm pretty darn sure Deep Purple are popular all over the world. I worked in a music store for 2 years here in Australia and we sold plenty of Deep Purple.

I know DEVO were very popular in Japan.

Brian Setzer Laughing and rockabilly seems a bit popuar here and lots of Jazz is very popular here but not very popular in other countries. I sometimes go to coffee shops run by old people playing John Coltrane and things like that but I cannot imagine thast happening back home. Surprised Tatu is popular here too. Smile

How does one pronounce ywngie malsteen anyway? I read a book about linguistics that said making a brand you cannot pronounce is a bad idea because it wont sell. Idea but maybe the katakana spelling helped them. Oh no, they are thinking now if only we made a pronouncable name maybe we could be big in USA too. Shocked

Japan has a healthy respect for CCR (Creedence Clearwater Revival) as well as other good rock bands in my experience.

I think it's pronounced Ying-gwy Malmsteen.

And he's one hell of a good guitarist!

God. yngwie Malmsteen brings back memories. When I was a schoolkid my guitar teacher was always harping on about the likes of Malmsteen, Vai, Satriani.

While there is no doubt Malmsteen can play the guitar faster than the speed of light and with perfect technique, his songs are pure crap. Just terrible hair metal that should never have seen the light of day.

Ha! Too funny.

My guitar teacher was totally in love with Malmsteen too. Yep. Got several of his albums. (Dare I admit it? Laughing ) Sure can play faster than the speed of light. And sometimes this amounts to pure garbage. But mostly I like it. In small doses (one album every few months these days!)

Vai, however, total crap. "Man I can play faster than Malmsteen... you just watch me! What? It makes my tracks sound like chicken wire in a blender? No problemo! Hey, Malmsteen... here I come!"

My 2 cents Razz

Tanuki

P.S. Oh, I almost forgot, I'm pretty sure the pron is "ing-vay" Wink
