Seems rather moot since the allegations against her were mainly mismanagement of funds... and in the ME the expat managers have pretty much zero say in finance. As to nepotism... that is the lifeblood of the Gulf so she will fit right in...

After slogging through the article, it sounds to me as if there was enough finger pointing going around to blame a large number of people for the collapse of the school.

same old... same old...

Thanks for the link, Sirens. The search committee probably never ran across it. You do have to give her credit for being clever enough to change the spelling of her name.

Dear Newbies at Dhofar High...I mean Dhofar U. (LOL),

Not only will you be working for the vice-chancellor from hell and his harpie HOD, but you will be paid about 2/3 as much as the the rest of us, who are no more qualified than you. . . the one or two of us who are staying, that is, who have concluded our paycheck is worth the bullsh*t. When you pass us in the hall and you just can't figure out our persistent smugness and condescension or our utter silence on anything but trivialities during the ridiculous teachers meetings...that's why. Sorry. Nothing personal.

As for Salalah, it's hot. Look at a map. Look at the equator and look at Salalah. November and December and January are nice. Go to beach, but watch your car. One bloke here had his car vandalized by some of those lovely Omanis...who are...the friendliest Arabs! Oh, and watch out for the sharks. And the currents that will drag you out to sea. But what about that lovely monsoon climate in the summer? Yes, the rain cools things off. Like humidity? Like mud? Like about a foot of water on the road every half a block? The Arabs love it. Like it when your rent triples? Oh, and the food! Hope you like cabbage and ketchup on your shawarma.

Yours truly,

Dissed in Dhofar

So, let me get this right... you plan to be rude and condescending to all new teachers next year because they will be paid less?

Goodness me and why haven't you resigned since Salalah is apparently such a hardship post. Did you not bother to look at a map and see that it is a hot country? Why would you be surprised that a people from the desert actually like rain? Do rents only go up in Salalah? Couldn't you learn to cook like most people and not have to suffer the indignity of the imperfect schwarma?

The issue of keying cars has been discussed here before because Omani boys seem to have a hobby of scratching cars. They got mine the second day after it was delivered from the shippers and I hadn't even taught yet - not time to produce an angry student. Laughing It is so common that it is not even discussed when you sell the car later.

Plan? Plan? I don't need no stinking plan! The salary difference just makes me feel superior. Don't have to think about it at all. Can't help it. Like I said, nothing personal. Here's the thing. You newbies should thank me for wising you up now, before your boots hit the ground and you still have the chance to either back out or resign yourself to the inequity. But some of you may not be reading this until you've arrived, in which case you will suddenly feel ill and will continue to feel ill for the rest of your contract.

The only thing superior about you, "Dissed", is your attitude. You won't be so smug when you find yourself "Dis-missed" - and good riddance to you.

I know, I know. Paris Hilton and I are just so damn lucky, it's hard to be humble. But I have to save it for the VC and HOD or I really will be dissed. Shocked

Ha ! I hear you 'dissed' , I took a job in Poland one time - it is freezing there in the winter ! Who knew ..? and then in Korea, man, those guys only eat noodles and smoke all day - what a hell hole !

It's hot in the Middle East, now that is a newsflash !

Thanks 'dissed' for an entertaining read - Advice to newbies who care to read this.......avoid whiners like this poster who have nothing better to do!

cheers, have a good summer, wear a hat and apply liberal amounts of sunscreen !

Oh my ! Looks like 'dissed' is another one that should have stayed at home in Blighty or the US. Some people are just not suited to TEFL in exotic locations !

Care to compare earnings, working hours and extras? We'll see how damn superior you feel afterwards, kiddo. Diss-mayed, probably.
