I know many schools are reluctant to give more then a ten month contract, perhaps under direction from provincial waishiban, or tradition, or because they can.

DON'T SETTLE FOR THIS

Have them add an additional unpaid contract month to the contract. That is exactly how my contract is worded, the last month is unpaid.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? It is free for them, and protects you. Maybe you want to stay another year and teach. Frees you from all the hassles and worries about needing to sign by a certain date, leaving by a certain date. Maybe after you finish you want to travel some. No need to bother changing visas etc. Just remember , You heard it here first!

Just my two cents worth from a guy stuck in China for the summer, but is too lazy to do any more teaching for the summer Laughing Maybe I can regain my top ten listing

Chris in Henan

PS the only people who irritate me more then the people who go online to play spades and bid blind nil to start... are the people who are who are always changing their log in name. Makes you wonedr Rolling Eyes what they want to hide Confused

Dear Chris,

This is very, very good advice and advice that I have used in the past.

Additionally, the PSB, in most provinces, will issue a visa with a 30-day window past the date on which the contract expires. In other words, if the contract expires on June 30, than most provinces will grant a visa that expires on July 30, etc., etc.

Your advice is very, very pertinent.

All the best,

HFG

The contract says two things one we get the same holidays as the Chinese and then says ten months. My place wanted me for another year but to sign another contract starting 1st September. I said no go. So I've done about 20 hours so far of work this month but on full pay. If they want you they will pay. Many places do this for those they want to keep.

You need to cover yourself for two months as most contracts restart after two months of summer holidays.
