Congrats to Ichiro! Today's performance in the All-Star game was beautiful.

Is there a better pure player in the MLB right now?

Shoot me down if you think I'm wrong.

Derek Jeter ranks pretty highly.

Ichiro is awesome. If anyone is going to hit .400 or break Dimaggio's hitting streak record it is going to be him.

Saw the game on TV. Ichiro is just awesome.

On a side note, I like threads like this, but why did my thread on Miss Japan winning the Miss Universe get deleted while this one is allowed to remain? Sad

I missed the game since I've already got rid of my TV in preperation for my heading to Japan at the end of this month. Ichiro is awesome. He's one of those players you wish could stay young forever because once he's gone there will never be another like him. Being from Seattle and a life long Mariners fan might make me biased though.
Speaking of biased, although I can't bring up any stats to show Derek Jeter is lousy, since he's a Yankee I cannot acknowledge he possesses any talent whatsoever.

Hey, another record for Ichiro - first inside the park homer in an AS game - ever! That's quite amazing when you think of how far more frequent inside homers were in the first part of the 1900's.

My Ichiro rookie card continues to grow in value...

Not to downplay his skill, I still think he's NOT the best player of all time. Somewhere in the bottom third of the top 15 players ever. But they guy ain't done yet, so he could easily emerge as the greatest of all time when he hangs up the shoes.

He certainly is a great player. Too bad he hasn't learned English yet, then he would be much more accepted by the fans outside of Seattle.

What channel was the all-star game on?

You mean the same fans outside of Seattle who overwhelmingly vote him into the All Star Game every year?

But I see your point, Gordon. There have been Japanese players who have put much more effort in learning the language. Hasagawa is a role model in this regard.

Ichiro is very much a savant. He has, since old enough to pick up a bat as a toddler, slept, ate, thought baseball. Nothing else matters to him (or more accurately, nothing else mattered to his father). It may be argued that his greatness as a player is, in part, due to this narrow-minded Zen focus on the game. If he actually took up serious hobbies, like studying English, it may diminish his focus on the game and weaken his abilities. In the end, I don't think it matters to him, his team or the game if he lacks PR skills and charm - his play speaks for itself.

In class I call him `Ichiro-sama.` Im hoping to start a trend, but my students look a little confused. He is clearly deserving of `sama` status, he is at the very least in the same league as Beckham - or even in a league of his own ..

He is a dream player, - is there anything that guy cant do - in a baseball game (apart from speak English ..) But, really for someone with his talent and focus - he doesn`t need to speak English ! Very Happy

Whether he knows English or not, he's a great player. He gets my vote for next year too (and I don't even watch baseball normally)!

He is by far the best pure hitter in the game right now, and possibly even all-time. Best all-around player in the game? That I cannot agree with.

I honestly think he would have had a chance of being a 5k hit man if he played his entire career in MLB...

I may have hit a nerve somewhere. I never said Ichiro isn't a great player, he is one of my favourites, but can't understand why he hasn't learned even a little English.

What more do you want from a player? Many players play well offensively, but poor defensively or vice versa. However, Ichiro plays very well both offensively and defensively. He has won a Gold Glove award in each of his first six years in the majors, all six as an outfielder. Probably has another one coming this year.

Oh, and there's "the throw"...

Let's not get carried away. Ichiro is awesome, and easily one of my favourite players in the game today (even saw him play in Kobe), but he's not one of the greatest players of all-time. Nor is he in the top 15 of all-time, as someone else suggested. He's a singles hitter who rarely walks. He's got limited power and might decline quickly if he loses any of his speed (and all of those infield hits). He's basically Tony Gwynn with slightly less power.
