Purely a hypertheoritical question , humour me if you can ,I am after all in the holiday mood ,but the rest of the country seems to be ın a pre-election fever . In case you hadn't noticed the ruling party (thats AK to you ) at least to what I have read in the English newspapers is the one that is going to do the country the most good and has in fact done so for the last 5 years . In fact optomisim is high from foreign investors and businessmen if they do get elected back into power this country is on a roll .
The question is ,do you agree ?
If you could vote ,would you, and who for , and why ?
What are the alternatives to Erdogan and his gang ?
Are they worse or better ?
Personally I am of the persausion "steady as she goes " but thats just me .
What do you think ?
Bear in mind you live here as well probably pay taxes too ,maybe we should have the vote as well . |

I'm british but married to a Turk and I have Turkish citzenship so I can vote. But who the hell do I vote for?
My hubby tells me CHP, don't vote for the religious nutters (Ak) All of my Turkish friends are split between MHP and CHP. So who does vote for the AK party?????
And does any one else think that it is a bit stupid to have an election in the middle of Summer! |

It's a false economy. There is 80 billion dollars of "hot" money floating around that makes them look good. Long timers will remember the last crash. I teach corporate bankers in the private sector. They are expecting the same to happen again. |

It's a good question, Ollie. My husband is also all anti-religious and pro-CHP, and because I'm kind of lazy, most my news about Turkish current events comes from him.
I'm not sure I believe all this business that AKP has a secret agenda to religi-fy everything, but as a conspiracy theory it's pretty scary.
I'd probably vote for the Communists. I like the busy as a bee logo for the Anavatan Partisi, but I hear they're kind of worse than everyone.... |

I'm not sure what that is, but it seems all the parties could be that... |

English (very) pop musician who boosted his flagging musical career by fronting an "Absurdist" political party in Britain in the 1970's. He is dead now I think.

Yep - topped himself a couple of years back. If only some other politicians would do the same. Turksih politics is rather scary, as I don;t think they really get democracy. It's a bunch of fat blokes who became politicians because they wanted to have their egos stroked and feel important. And it's all stridently right-wing; even the nominal lefties are somewhere to the right of Genghis Khan. |

Its surprising what the Turkish English newspapers have to say about the election but they seem to have one thing in common .Both of them agree that this so-called hidden religious agenda has yet to show its face but having said that in a recent survey most people who did not wont them in cited the headscarf issue as their main concern .
It seems as well that the opposition has very little to offer as an alternative government and the promises they make seem to be just that only promises , we all know how good Turks are at making them but keeping them is something else .
Getting back to the op if I could vote I would allow the AK party in as the others are anti everything esp foreign trade ,investment and workers . It also looks like thats what other countries expect to happen . Their next hurdle is to find another president ,someone who may be democratically elected that is not going to compromise their secularist ideals ,it seems in the end demoracy will be sacrificed in order to save the secular state , the big problem is that the rich "elite" of this country hate the idea of losing their power and wealth to the vast silent majority who just want a better standard of living that previous governments have denied them so the A.K party will win the election . A coaltion is the worst outcome . |

I'd vote DP. I was reading part of their manifesto this morning. They are going to abolish the consumption tax on alcohol. Cheaper beer gets my vote |

That sums up Turkish politics fairly succinctly. |
