Thinking about coming back to Japan and need some advice. Also if you are going to be negative or you are a troll please go somewhere else. I have non-English Bachelors Degree. I have 3 years teaching experience. 2 in Japan and 1 in the States, Social Science. I also have a TEFL certificate and am working on a grad degree, not English. I was a JET for a year, worked as a Dispatch Alt for a year. Tried a brief stint at Nova as well. My Japanese, is conversational for the most part. I'm in my mid 20's. I want to go back to Japan and work at least for a few years, don't know what the future holds.
Jet's, out since I've done that. Don't want to work with Nova. Is it true that alot of prefectures are going back to JET over dispatch companies next school year or is that just a rumor?, as there are usually many of these boards. Are there any reputable eikawas? Do private high school jobs actually exist, I hear they are scarce? What is my best option? I realize not being Japanese thats its hard to be ultra successful. Also my Japanese isn't good enough for a translator gig yet. What are my options? I'd like to work towards something, or to do something somewhat respectful, some future, something that pays descent. Any ideas or are we all just looking for the same thing and never finding it?
Thanks Asgard |

Not sure what you mean by "out". Depending on how long you were a JET, you could apply to do it again. Or is it just that you don't want to be a JET ALT again?

Have not heard this, and if you talk to the people in Kanagawa, it is just the opposite.

Yes. Getting their names is not always easy, though. And, you may still have to live with some quirks in contracts. Depends on what you really want.

Yes, they exist. They just aren't advertised all that publicly (or that often in English).

Come here and look around. Trying to apply from abroad limits you to about a dozen eikaiwas or a couple of dispatch companies. You certainly have the experience to get a mainstream HS job, but it is unlikely that you will get one in a public school, so make contacts for private HS and sniff around. Join ETJ and/or JALT for the connections.
Once you get that first job upon your return, network like crazy and see if you can land something else, perhaps for a "self-sponsorship" visa situation using several PT gigs (including university positions, which could then lead to FT ones there, if you are so inclined).
Do you want to teach business English classes? There is a separate market. The FAQ stickies have some names.

At the risk of sounding snooty, if you want to be a translator, get the necessary language skills. Friend of mine had 2-kyu and did translations for ECC. Boring work, and it only paid wages similar to eikaiwa.

Define "decent pay". You probably realize that teaching has its limits, so if you pursue other fields, you are going to have to show skills, experience, and the right degree, plus high Japanese ability. |
