Your thoughts? Quality of life, things to do, culture, etc? Sounds like HCM has a bit more going for it, but that is just from trawling the internet and I'd love to hear from those who have actually lived in both. I'm considering Vietnam for next year. Have lived and taught in Thailand, with my child in tow. Learnt many a lesson, as you do as a newbie, but was an awesome experience for us on the whole and we know what/what not to do for next time. Came home for a while and am now getting itchy footed again.
Also, one question, being a female, is Vietnam the same as Thailand where my (attractive) western girlfriends and I couldn't find men friends to save ourselves with the hordes of Thai women around?

Can't tell you anything about HCMC vs. Hanoi, but in terms of HCMC vs. BKK and T-land, in spite of their numerous similarities, the two places are still worlds apart. Thai culture, as you know, is centred around pleasure and fun, while Vietnamese culture is focused on work and perseverance, like the Chinese.
Also, Thailand is much more developed and Westernized, although with the booming economy HCMC is changing rapidly. There are some good places for shopping, dining, entertainment, etc. but nothing like the seemingly endless variety of Bangkok. |

Thanks, I have lived in Thailand so I know all about Bkk. I'm sure they are quite different cities. I'd kinda like a comparison of the cities as I've 'done' Thailand and would like to try something new.
