|

You know, I've closely studied quite a lot of posts concerning Russia on this forum and the JIJ, and the discussions always occasionally take a detour into the pitfalls of international relationships. One that I now remember seeing repeatedly is some kind of fixation Russian girls may have with receiving flowers. Any takers on this? And what's the deal with the odd/even rule? Do they actually bother to COUNT the flowers you give them? What if two blossoms share a shaft, is it open to interpretation? |

Yes. The goddesses demand sacrifice. Buy flowers.
Do NOT give an even number of flowers (ie, a dozen roses is a no-no). Even numbers are for funerals and dead people.
They generally count the blossoms (assuming the blossoms are large enough).
Yes, they do count. After all, the more you buy them, the more you love them, right? |

Roses are a little strong unless you are trying to come on that way.
I always had good luck with carnations. My best advice is to ask the lady running the shop what she suggests. There are flower shops everywhere even in Tomsk in February. |

Useful information, thank you.
However, how long is the flower giving supposed to last? Forever? |

If you plan on marrying them and staying with them, uh, yes. |

In other cases just once may suffice! |

Ahhh, yes, "Woman's Day" is fast approaching....and MUST NOT forget the darn flowers!! But not really sure where this deep-seated fascination with flowers comes from with these Russian women.
24 hour flower shops located on every corner)) Quite convenient for the guy attempting to satisfy his lady friend's insatiable hunger for flowers!! Been married sometime now to my Russian wife and it's still to the dog house for me if I don't bring back reasonable pile of flowers for "my queen"
Sorry but I just couldn't help bringing this post back from the dead! Happy Early Woman's Day! |

So how many flowers are appropriate to give? An odd number, say 7, carnations? |

You didn't mention that the color yellow is off limits for flowers, by the way. Yellow is the color of sulphur and therefore stands for the devil.
Pink, purple, white, and red are quite safe though.
(I learned this from my Russian teacher. Gotta love cultural differences!) |

Overdoing it? Hee hee! Simply not possible in the Motherland. Nothing succeeds like excess! |

Much safer not to give any.
No mistakes with number, time/date, color, type, etc...... |
