I am a single woman who is considering accepting a job in Bangkok. I seem to read tons of stories of men marrying Thai woman and am just curious as to what life is like for single woman in Thailand. |

Well, if your young and into partying and being with different partners, you'll have fun. If you are not young AND into partying, you will find things a bit boring and lonely. |

MOD EDIT Given that you said that one needs to be into being with different partners:)
I'd disagree. On average, however, finding a decent guy here may be more difficult than in other countries. I spoke to one decent looking English lady and she shared a few stories with me on how one Thai b/f turned out being married, while another was overly controlling. There are decent guys here, of course, but... perhaps like in every other country, it may take time to find him. A long time perhaps? |

I can't say much about the farang female and Thai male side of the equation, but I would guess that some Western males might find a Western lady (which I am assuming you are) of interest.
Relationships in and of themselves are difficult enough - but throw in communication issues and the difficulties double.
Personally, if I was single - I'd take a shot at a well-educated and interesting Western woman who was roughly in my age range. Cultural relatedness would certainly help a relationship along.
But, uh . . . that just my opinion. |

In my experience it's just far easier to find a local. Finding a well educated interesting western woman who's comparable in body mass to the locals and who's not slinging a whole pack of home-grown western attitude is a chore. |

It really depends on your age here, the younger girls have no problem finding cute guys as theres tons of young hot shots working here for various compamies, plus there are many cute male models from around the world working here at any given time.
But if your over 40, thats a different ball game. The majority of the men in that age bracket, seem to date thai women. There are some that prefer euro women, but they are scarce.
There are many other countries that are far more western woman friendly.
Thailand is good to work in for the experience itself, but as for relationships I wouldn't recommend it. I've been here for months and haven't met a decent guy yet, I just don't bother looking now haha. I think I'll just wait till I go to europe for my next job haha. easier. |

Which countries? I'm an American woman in my 40s. I'm trying to figure out where it would be easiest to fit in. |

Care to exand a little bit on exactly where that might be? I've been all over Asia and it's the same story wherever you go. Men are men. You think Thailand is bad try going about it in Korea where society treats women like indentured servants, and views you as obese if you have more than .001% fat. Honestly my advice to you is to stay back in the country where you came from if you are looking for a relationship. It might sound pretty harsh but when given the choice between a typical Western woman and a 20 something gal who has the dimensions of a runway model (and it isn't hard to find em, and even less hard to date them) what do you think we are going to do? |

Your correct, Asia in general is the same, there are always exceptions.
I have a couple of girlfriends who are married to Thai men and one who is married to a Malaya man and works well.
But I would stick to outside Asia, in Europe, depends what your after too.
Turkey is not a bad place, especially on the coast around Bodrum way!
I've recently met a few young marines that are based in Okinawa and assure me there are many men there who would love to meet a nice western lady (not all men are attracted to the same thing!) haha. If your working in Japan, might be a fun place to go for a ladies weekend haha.
Ahh theres always Italy! Now they at least like women with some curves and also Germany! PM me if you want anymore details |

Forgot to add, that I've been working in and out of Asia for 15 years and in my experience that these so called little lambs with the dimensions of a runway model (if there tall, hey they might be a dude!) are not always so sweet! I've seen many many male friends of mine burned badly by them, a couple even ended up doing a stint in jail lol.
good luck with that! haha Karma for being so shallow lol |

Yeah I guess your right. About as shallow as our gals are for dating only guys who drive a Porsche or a Escalade. I've met and dated lots of women in Asia and some have been good and others not so good, but for those guy friends of yours who got burned or ended up in jail, kudos for being so stupid. I'll put my time and money on one of the locals any day of the week even if their attitudes might not always be the greatest at least they don't look like a spent cartridge by the age of 25. You can get a far better deal here. So go shop for your used cars if thats your thing, in the end it all costs the same. |

I'm curious Takeyaon, where are you from?
Its kind of sad that you think all western women are into chasing men with flash cars etc. I think most of the western women working in poorer countries are usually not that type. Most of the young women I know that work here are working with charity organisations etc and are far from being shallow. In fact I can't stand people who flaunt money just to appeal to women, I find it repulsive.
But I understand where you are coming from, the whole dating scene in the western world flat out sucks, there are so many idiots out there, both male and female, who will suck the life out of you.
Best of luck to you and enjoy your time in Thailand. |

I lived in Missouri most of the time back in the States, with brief stints in New York, Vermont, and Arizona. All over the States it's the same thing, gals who are even modestly pretty know what they're worth, and are usually married by my age. The ones that aren't well, generally there's your reason. I taught in Korea for the past two years and nearly all the Western women there are overweight and packing the good ol attitudes that they have been indoctrinated with since birth. The ones who aren't are usually the "earth children" types who have never bought a stick of deoderant in their lives. Thailand is great in every respect as far as I am concerned and I am having a great time here. |

Lovetowander, Takeyaon makes things out to be much worse than they are..it is actually not nearly that bad for western women in Asia. Here's a more realistic portrayal of at least the situation in Japan--told by women: |
Oh yeah and by the way...here's an article she might find interesting that was written by a WOMAN who did time in Korea. It also addresses issues concerning the same phenomenon in Thailand. Now I will admit that I haven't been to Japan but I have worked in Korea as well as currently being in Thailand.

For some reason, certain western guys seem to get off on insulting western women and/or belittling their chances to have a social life in Asia. Usually, these guys are just frustrated because they could never date in their home countries--it's referred to as the "charisma man" phenomenon here: |
Oh yes, we are ALL losers who can't get jobs or women back home. You'd do great on the Korean boards. There it's called "the world's greatest giggalo who, of course left his "6 figure" income job back in the states for reasons other than he's accusing everyone else" phenomenon. I wont lie. For a 37 year old it's tough to find any relationship happiness in America. Is it because I am a loser and a social failure? You might want to take into consideration that by my age most of the available women are married or the ones who are divorced are man-haters (justifiable to an extent depending on how they were treated in their last relationship)who are packing tons of baggage (emotional and almost always physical). When I was in my 20's I never had a problem finding dates back in America. Things change as you get older for both sexes but that doesn't always qualify someone as a loser because they are faced with a skewed field of opportunity and/or simply don't find whats available attractive. My observations about Korea are right on. I will say that in Thailand, most of the western women I have seen here are relatively thinner than the ones who ended up in Korea. I have no explanation as to why that is. But in either case I think that the average Western women will have her work cut out for her in either scenario, unless of course she is a perfect 10, runway/swimsuit model type, but honestly how many of those women(western ones of course) have you actually met since coming to Asia? I don't view this as mean spirited or hateful, although it could obviously be interpreted as such. I am simply giving people a dose of reality as I have seen it and it holds true, and is based on personal experience, not some faceless voice on a forum populated by people many of whom are simply seeking moral support.

Bottom line: if you're adventurous, outgoing, basically positive and thick-skinned, you'll be fine in Asia--or anywhere, really. |
Bottom line, if you are physically good enough to compete with the locals you probably wont have any trouble at all getting dates from exapts or the local guys. But if you aren't considered a "catch" where you are now then don't assume you will be here.
Good luck! |
