Hi! I have an interview coming up. I checked the search, but nothing answered my question specifically...

For the NOVA interview, it says wear "business attire" I've been brought up to think that business attire, for a lady, is either a pants suit with jacket, a skirt suit with/without jacket, or long pants with a dark colored or white blouse, and heels.

For my interview: I'm going to wear gray dress pants, a white blouse with a black underblouse. Would this be considered too informal?

Thank you!

Your outfit doesn't sound too informal! You should do just fine. Good luck.

pass it along--

One guy in my interview went with the tie and shirt--no jacket. Might have just been my particular group of 10 otherwise well-dressed people, but he stuck out.

The black underblouse sounds like it might be a bit casual - think `conservative` and then think `conservative` again.

Id recommend wearing a suit, as first preference, of either pants or skirt, business/corporate-style. Or, a co-ordinated jacket and pants or skirt.

Probably pants / skirt and dress shirt (go for long-sleeves, esp. if you have no jacket) would be ok as long as it looks smart and tidy (and conservative !!)

Again, think `conservative meets corporate`, at least for the interview stage. In the schools I believe the standard or dress can vary.

- I dont believe it would be possible to be too over-dressed, in a `corporate-look` sense for an interview with a Japanese language school.

Good ruck.

Yeah, out of about a dozen men at my interview, only two didn't wear a jacket, and they really stuck out. (One actually left during the first break.)

I seem to recall the women were a little less dressed up on the whole, but I would definitely err on the side of formal.

I wore a black shirt with a navy blue tie and beige pants. I might have stood out more, but the other canidates there were women and I think one guy who did wear a suit. I can't speak for the other guy or gals, but I got the job offer.

Stick to solid colors (avoid the warm colors) and make sure everything you wear is neatly pressed. But even more important is make sure you look good to. Clean hair cut, good smile, and good posture. A cave troll wearing a nice suit is a still a cave troll.

Recruits, that is fresh-faced uni grads starting jobs in Japan, invariably wear black suits. Women wear skirt suits with white or pastel blouses, guys wear black suits with white or blue shirts and inoffensive ties.

If you are working for the NBA in Japan, then a fresh purple or orange suit will work. Four or five buttons on the jacket is de rigeur if you have the height for it (6'0" or taller). Baseball cap with team logo strongly suggested.

Pants are a good choice, since NOVA likes you to jump and run around. You'll see what I mean when you get there.

Business attire equals suit. Not business casual (which is what you described). Japan is more conservative about dress than Canada. It was a big deal for men to start going without a tie in summer even though it is often over 30C before humidex. In fact a lot of the eikaiwas around here haven't allowed "cool biz" rules to infiltrate their operations. It's thirty plus degrees, they're wearing a black suit and tie.

Gah! Unbelievable! At the school board where I work, everyone including the superintendent is wearing Cool-biz. Read: Dress pants and short-sleeved dress shirt with no tie. Shirt colors vary but white is predominant.

There's even a sign up on the door that tells us that it's acceptable to be dressed in this manner until September 30th.

NOVA literature suggests that guys can get by without wearing a coat everyday, but the pictures in the same booklets (staged, I know) always picture them in one. I am bringing two coats with me, but only one can really be part of a "business suit." Nova probably has bigger things on its mind though..

Yeah, I know...

Everyone had on a jacket--thank GOD I went out and bought one, although only one girl was in a skirt--and she wore a green jacket, too.

Thanks guys!
