In Taiwan, a DOS means: someone who is young, inexperienced, underpaid and generally incompetent in the classroom. There are two kinds of DOSes. Those who see the meaninglessness of their role and do not wish to do it; hence, treating it as a DOS. Then we have the second kind, those who take it seriously; the latter are incurable yes men (and women) who are generally unemployable in their own country. There is a very rare third kind, those who know enough to do a good job and actually try; however, they do not last long as such behaviour flies in the face of the Taiwanese educational system.

Taiwan is only a country for those starting out; the more you know about teaching the greater the disadvantage you are at. (Plus, experience and qualifications generally don't contribute much to your pay!) |
