Hi, I found this internet site after noticing an increase in the general intellectual level of trolls on this and other message boards (that is, from 0.01 brain cells to 0.02). The section on multiple troll 'attack waves' is particularly interesting.

Some of the lingo was a bit beyond me, but still... damn!!! I had no idea it was such a "science." I've been caught a few times by trolls, I think.

Dinner party theories, but still interesting. Based on their definition of one of these maladjusted cyber personalities, I nominate Aristotle as the ESL Cafe's resident KOOK:
"2. kook: a regular poster who continually posts messages with no apparent grounding in reality. The kook trademark is paranoia and grandiosity. Kooks will often build up elaborate imaginary support structures, fake corporations and the like, and continue to act as if those things are real even after their falsity has been documented in public. While they may appear harmless, and are usually filtered out by the other regular participants in a newsgroup or mailing list, they can still cause problems because the necessity for these measures is not immediately apparent to newcomers; there are several instances, for example, of journalists writing stories with quotes from kooks who caught them unaware. See http://www.crank.net/usenet.html for more info." |

Hilarious.
Hm . . . I wonder who else (other famous people) we could add
On a different website (wilders security forums, I believe) someone posted the same (or very similar) website regarding "trolls," a term which, till then, I'd not heard.
OTOH, there seems--often--to be a subtle "reverse-troll" dynamic at work on some forums. That is, sometimes, the most active board (forum) members tend to re-inforce the "received wisdom." Any "outsider" or person who challenges the dominant prevailing norms or accepted opinions are considered to be "idiots," troublemakers, or (maybe) "trolls."
Just a thought.
Like most other terms--when clearly defined, "troll" can be useful. But when used loosely, these terms can also be applied to anyone we wish to disparage: "flamers" might apply, or . . . hey, how about "terrorist"? Yeah, that's a good one (joke). |

this seems to happen to the china forum. anyone who seems strange or suddenly posts a lot gets accused of being a reincarnated troll until they prove themselves innocent. but we've certainly had our share of trolls. |

CS would qualify based on Seth's description too.
I'm no John Proctor. I've been sucked in by trolls, as well as accusing innocent folk of being one, but I've also spotted a lot. Maybe we're too "troll aware". I look at every new poster suspiciously. Roger and I disagree on Wanderlust. I'm sure he's Bertrand, and is just playing down the linguistics degree and anti-EF stance for now. As such, he's not a troll: just a psycho.
Anyway, if he weighs the same as a duck, and he's made out of wood, BURN HIM....sorry, FLAME HIM! |

I actually quite enjoyed Bertrand's rants, they were very educational!
The sheer amount of time it must have taken him to write some of them amazed me. I was equally impressed when he included a "references" section at the end of his posts. |

The linguistic rants were good, but the anti-everything-China ones are puerile. |

Bertrand is a different breed of troll. At first, he was just a normal, mild mannered guy who happened to hate everything about China. His ravings started getting more schizo as time wore on and eventually was booted. Then he (probably) came back recently as a pure troll. It's like a troll metamorphosis or something. The descent into troll maddness, like a Chinese EF parasite eating his brain. |

Careful, careful. This is tantamount to free thought and usually results in being banned so that others can post comments about you to which you can not respond. |
