Hello everyone. I was hoping someone had some information on the grooming standards in regards to hair length for guys. I like to have my hair about shoulder length and was hoping I could keep it.

In the last 7 months Nova's share price has fallen by 60%, they have been investigated by the Ministry of Economics for illegal business practices, suspended for 6 months from selling courses lasting over a year, kicked off the list of training providers who may receive Government training funding and stripped of their public sector contracts in Osaka as part of a seperate ongoing corruption investigation against them there. Branch management have not recieved their normal 6-monthly routine 'bonus', teachers are leaving in droves and they are haemorrhaging money at a rate of knots that should exhaust their entire assets sometime around mid-December.

If you cut your hair for the interview there is never likely to be any time in the future when the length of your hair will be such that anyone anal enough to be bothered by it will not have far more pressing problems to deal with.

Your last remark is pretty condescending. Companies have business matters to attend to, yes, but they also choose to have their own dress code regardless. How strict they are depends on the company.

Cut your hair for the interview, then let it grow. Your choice. Why not ask tactfully during the interview what is acceptable? As long as you keep it groomed well and clean, you might be ok, but it pays to find out.

Look at the pictures on the NOVA home page for an indication, but ask nevertheless.

'Companies' may choose whatever to attempt to enforce whatever rules like but these rules have to be enforced by individuals ('lackeys') and how much time these 'lackeys' give over to enforcing the more petty of the regulations that filter down from head office like sewage through a strainer made of old string underpants depends upon a multitude of factors which very much includes whether or not said lackeys have not other more pressing concerns. Concerns such as the prospect of their imminent unemployment due to the corporate bankruptcy of those dumping the sewage on their heads.

Nevertheless Glenski you have certainly convinced me that there do exist some people so incredibly anal that they could concern themselves with enforcing nonsense hair length regulations whilst watching their jobs go to hell in a handcart around their short back and sides.

Wow, love the posts guys! Thanks for the input... I'm heading over there in a week and I'll just show up and ask them in person. I haven't signed anything so we will see.

whicever company you go for, i'd suggest cutting your hair for the interview, and then maybe growing it back out later (shouldn't take too long to grow it to shoulder length). nova isn't the only company in japan with a conservative dress-code.

Thanks for the advice. I was looking at their website and I couldn't find how short the hair has to be. What do you think? It almost sounds like you have to have a GQ haircut or something. How about goats?

eeewwwww! Eikaiwa company homepage photos of foreign employees

either

どえりゃ ヘイボン

or else

だせ~!

But seriously, look neat (whether long-haired or drone-y) for the interview, get the job and resculpt yourself once the ink is dried on paper.

I have frequently sported long, rather out of control hair in Japan (always untied), partly out resistance to the "hey, my friend owns a set of hair clippers, how do you like my No.1 buzz cut... chool, huh? mentality.

I have read some other threads on this subject, however they never seem to give a final jerrys thought. I have a buzz cut grade 1 all over, is this a no no for an interview with 1 of the big 3?
Thanks
