When filling out the Monterrey Tec Solicitud...Extranjero, you have to list five campuses of interest. I'm familiar with the Saltillo campus, but most of my other choices would be based on being near the water or a well-known city. Any special recommendations about great places to be or bad places to avoid? Thanks!

My recommendation would be to avoid ITESM, Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas. Although the coordinator is a pretty decent guy, the administration can't be trusted based on a bait and switch experience I had in applying and going to work for them.

So, right now, my list of five preferred campuses includes Saltillo, Guadalajara, Mazatlan, Veracruz, and Ciduad de Mexico Sur. From reading other threads, Im guessing that Puebla, and Oaxaca are great places (though I dont know how to recognize the name(s) of the Tec campuses in or near Oaxaca), and El Gallo recommends that I should avoid ITESM, Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas.

Any other thoughts before I send in my application? I know its the weekend, so Ill wait until tomorrow before sending it in. Thanks!

I just finished a two year contract at the Estado de Mexico campus. It is basically a suburb north west in Mexico City. The area Atizapan (Atizapunk) isn't great, and you either have to have a car or a lot of patience with public transportation to get into the city. It can be isolating. The campus has lots of great programs which are free for teachers, however. I would often just work during the week and then go into the city for the weekend.
I don't think you're going to have much of a hope of getting a job now, because they're going to start classes in about two weeks. Job security is also really sketchy if you don't get a two year contract ahead of time (to give you a full semester of courses). Depending on the whim of your boss (and they can change), you may find youself with no classes some semesters, until you both make amends. They also have your students evaluate you. If you don't have a more permanent contract, the administration can dismiss you based on your evaluation score. The politics can be outrageous.
Just some things to think about... I loved the students, but I'm happy to be out of that system.

TEC MONTERRAY

I worked in Torreon at the secodaria campus. I found the experience to be one of the worse in 12 years of international teaching. Like McDonalds they are a chain. I would suggest talking to current or recent staff members at what ever campus you are inquiring about.

The OP is specifically looking for positions at the UNIVERSITY level. Good advice, still.

I studied at the TEC in Cuernavaca and loved it, but I know studying is much different than teaching. But Cuernavaca is beautiful, and also not too far from DF if you want to visit the bigger city.

I found the strengths and weaknesses to be identical at both the university and high school levels.
I recently discovered that the full time teaching salary for an experienced teacher at the university level, with a Masters and completing a PhD, is $18 000 pesos a month. This is considerably lower than the same positions at other universities in Mexico City. Part time teachers recieve $150 an hour.

I think that ITESM has made the mistake of many empires before it. It used to be a quality institution whose students recieved a quality education and it could proudly say that if formed the leaders of Mexican society. But somewhere along the line they got greedy and decided to rapidly expand. It's no surprise that the quality of education suffered. Tec students no longer earn top places in national competitions and exams.
It's been asked if there is a Oaxaca Campus. They tried to start one a few years ago, first offering only 4 continuing education diplomas on the weekends with professors fravelling down from the Puebla campus. They obviously didn't do an extensive market study and priced themselves right out of the market. No one enrolled, to expensive they said.

That makes perfect sense since leadership begins at the top and sets the tone for the entire organization.
