|

Okay...my long-term goal, I think, is to teach ESL in the public schools. Currently, I'm getting my CELTA and expect to go abroad for a year or two, but would like to teach ESL in the USA long-term. I know this will involve getting a master's and certification. Just wondering if anyone has made this transition and has any advice. Thanks. |

I am getting direct phone calls from US school principals all day today after registering at www. teachers-teachers.com This week is a big scramble to fill ESL spots before school starts. I just can't decide where to relocate to! |

Vanica,
I will be coming back to the States in a couple of years and that is good to hear. Where in the country are you getting offers from, if I may be curious? (I'm certified for ESOL in NY)

They are desperate for ESL teachers here in NY. I interviewed with this one company a few months ago and the starting salary was $25-$30 an hour, depending on your experience and education. I was surprised it was that high. This was for a job in Queens, so I'm sure you could make more in Manhattan. |

If you are a US citizen or resident, you can get a full-time teaching position in the public schools in NYC. Check TeachNY for the salaries. |

Yes, definitely. But not in Manhattan. You'd have to live in Queens. |

Hi Vanica,
You said that you were getting calls from principals in different states in response to teachers-teachers -- Are they calling you and wanting to do phone interviews, or are you expected to travel to the schools to interview? It's just that I'm in Spain at the moment and am wondering if I apply to schools from here if they would be happy doing phone interviews. Thanks for any thoughts. |

I've been that whole route. Going there, getting my certification, worked in the public school...and left.
If you're interested in why,

(warning - it involves some reading! The POV is Christian, but even if you don't care about that, it would still be of interest.) |

Henry, If you stand on QED, then you miss the point of how this impacts everybody regardless of faith. The nature of the beast I describe is not a Christian one. My posts there are aimed at Christians, so I recommend Christian solutions for Christians, but the mess we call public education remains everyone's problem, however you solve it. But you can't begin to solve it if you don't understand the nature of the problem.
PS - I specifically warned people of the Christian POV above.
I know you think I'm crazy and that's OK. I think you are indoctrinated so I guess we're even! |

Phone interviews, actually. I might stay in Montreal, however, because I cannot find childcare for my daughter anywhere in the US or English Canada like you have here. Good luck! I was contacted today from the Virgin Islands! |

Well, Henry, if you actually do the reading, you might find out. |
