So Saudi lost 0-1 against rivals Iraqin the Asian Cup football finals (soccer) today. Game was played in Jakarta, Indonesia, with the Indonesian crowd really offering a lot of enthusiasm - that was a good choice of venue. Had the game been played in a country like Korea or Japan, few people would have attended (Koreans and Japanese are not interested in other nations) and the game would have taken place in a sterile atmosphere.

Iraq always looked the better team in this final, with more pace, possession and penetration up the field.

The goal scorer from Iraq - Younes - is an interesting character, but his goal header was superb, and for one so tall and gangly (1.86/80 kilos) Younes certainly showed a lot of pace and coordination.

I was disappointed with Saudi, as they always looked a bit passive throughout, and I was expecting great things from the Saudi player - Malek - ('mighty mouse' 1.67/64 kilos) and the other players, but they were never really in it, despite a few chances. Iraq, deserved to win, they were the better side on the day, and quite a bit more offensive.

Interesting that the bigger budget team (Saudi) could not compete with a soccer Federation (Iraq) which has always had financial challenges. Proves that 'heart' can win over budget and money being thrown left, right and centre, as is the case in Saudi.

Did Saudi Arabia come to a standstill so that people could watch the match? I imagine that would be the case.

In Korea, where ghost is presently working, Koreans find it strange that adult Arab men spend so much time hugging and kissing each other on the cheeks. Vast cultural differences between the Far East and the Arab countries.

In football it is 'professionalism' and 'tactics' which are more important than 'money' and 'propaganda' (as with the Saudi team!).
After their loss, The Saudis and Uncle Bandar, first thing to do is to sack the team manager!

In Saudi Arabia, Arabs find it strange that adult American/British/French men, I am not sure about Korean, spend so much time kissing each other's wife on the cheeks!

Yes, I think, it is related to 'clash of culture'.

I agree with you Ghost. This is great news for the Iraqis. Hopefully, their morale will be lifted even a little by the news. BTW, I think your football (soccer) vocab. needs reviewing. I've never heard of a ''goal header''. You must be American.
