It should be quite easy for you to obtain a tourist visa at your local Taiwan representative office. A long duration multiple entry visa is the best that most people can get. It allows you to stay in Taiwan for 60 days and can be extended, up to six months. All you have to do is leave the country and you are entitled to another 60 days.
Legally speaking, you are not allowed to work on this visa but I know many people who have been doing it for years. My father owned a business here for 15 years and used this type of visa the entire time. Simply tell them you are a foreign business person who buys things here and you won't have any trouble.
This visa will give you the luxury of looking around for a good job without the AVOIDABLE visa hassle.You can also upgrade this visa to a ARC if you decide to obligate yourself to a school and they can offer a visa. Most kindergarten s cannot offer a resident visa.
It also means that no school can blacklist you if you decide to quit. You also have the choice of refusing to work under contract.
I would reccomend you come here and look around. Take a couple of part time jobs. One in the morning and one in the afternoon or evening. This is very easy to do in the summer. Tell them to pay you by the hour, once a week. You should be able to get 20 to 100 hours a week this way. Do the math and you will see what that adds up to, even at 500nt per hour.
Taipei is the best area for summer work.

I have to say, I feel somewhat drawn to this approach. However, will schools let you get away with this sort of thing? Wouldn't they be jepoardizing their business by hiring a teacher without a proper visa? Or are things pretty loose in a place like Taichung or Taipei.

And what sort of protection do you have from a school taking an intense dislike to you, for whatever reason, and ratting you out? Although, I suppose that an ARC wouldn't protect you under these circumstances either, huh?

Are illegal workers deported regularly?

Hmm..just trying to get a handle on this next venture.

if so, bye-bye. they'll find one way or another to induce you to leave. the tools they have a their disposal are plentiful. if the boss is an arse, then his employees are often his tissue paper.

The fact is that you may actually have more protection from your employer�s ridiculous demands and vengeance by working illegally. The only difference between unofficial deportation and official deportation is the name and the fact that, for you to be legally deported there is supposed to be a court order. Not so if you get unofficially deported for breaking your contract. Once your employer has your ARC they own you in Taiwan. That is the viewpoint of the government of the ROC.
You now have the added option of getting a student ARC. A much better deal.

Good heavens. Why are those foreigners in jail, exactly? For working illegaly or overstaying their visas?? Or a drunken brawl or smoking weed? Maybe I misunderstood your post.

Nearly all westerners in Taiwanese prisons are there on drug charges. English teachers who do get caught are usually given 30 days to leave the country after they pay their fine. The fine is usually around 30,000 nt.
You can now book a midnight cruise for a visa run. It cost 2500nt.

I too have been trying to get more info on the one night cruise. I heard about it on ICRT but star cruises in Taiwan only has a Chinese website and I can�t find the info there. Maybe Aristotle can find it he/ she seems to have many more resources at his/ her disposal.

Sorry I took so long, I have been a bit busy as of late.
Star cruises does offer a one night cruise that does count as leaving the country even though you just go out to sea and turn circles.
It cost 2600 NT and may require multiple bookings to get that price. There is also a ferry that goes up to Okinawa and some of the outlying islands for a little more.
If you are doing the landing visa thing this might be the best option until you can work out something better.
Sorry the web site for Star Cruises in Taiwan is only in Chinese but they said they were working on the English one.
