I have a JFRV, so I do not need a school visa or ARC. I have attempted to start working with a buxiban, but honestly, it seems too much hassle and too much time. (I know not all schools are like this, but this particualr one seems to be)

I am thinking that I may just go off on my own and work with privates, but I am not sure where to teach. Do you meet in coffee shops? Are there rental classrooms? I don't want everyone coming to my home, so I am curious what others do.

You can teach at people's homes but beware that aside from lesson time you will need to add on travel time. You can try coffee shops but some of those are hellish noisy and even though the Taiwanese have a capacity to (appear to) work in noisy environments I personally would find it difficult to teach in such a setting.

A good place to start to see if anyone needs private classes is tealit.com - there's usually a few ads that will be relevant to you there.

I agree with Forest that coffee shops can be difficult due to the many distractions.

I think that your idea of teaming up with a school is the best one. See if you can find a school that is willing to allow you to lease out a classroom at certain times. You then have everything covered including a whiteboard and off you go. I think that the students would appreciate this too as it would be more professional.

Teachers who are here on ARC's would need to be careful of the legalities of this, but as you have an open residency you should make the best of it.

Check out www.myu.com.tw for privates.

Thanks for the replies. I agree about the coffee shop noise. That is a big concern for me.

Also, thank you or the private student website links.

What are the legalities of teaching privates in Taiwan? If you are on a work visa for teaching, is it legal to teach privates?

Well, thanks for the hi-jack...but to answer your question...

If you have a work visa, that visa and ARC are linked to a specific business or school...so privates would not be legal. My visa and ARC are not connected to a school.

Is teaching privates a big problem in Taiwan like it is in Korea?

Can anyone tell me why the Consulate in New York is giving me such a difficult time in trying to get a 60 day toursit visa. They have the contact and Taiwan ID number of my friend but they said that I have to have to have a copy of his ID card.

Are they giving me a hard time because I wrote that my occupation as teacher?

when i did that form many years ago, I was told by a friend NOT to put down teachers, just say you are going to visit I don't think it helps if you have a contact here either as they will know you may be going to Taiwan to teach...strange I know.....
