I've browsed through the Job forums in Dave's and a lot of the Korean and Chinese postings have "submit a recent photo" as an application requirement?

Why is this? Let's keep it real.

In some cases, a photo may be required to process a visa or work permit. If that's the reason, the request is legit. In other cases, it's a subtle form of racial and/or age discrimination. Dodgy school owners are often interested in hiring the 'ideal caucasion boy or girl' because they think it's good for business, but they can't come out and say that in their advertisements. Requiring a photo is an easy way around that. They may use the photo to weed out African Americans, Asians, people who are overweight or old farts like me --- because we don't fit their business model. Personally I think it s.u.c.k.s but there's not too much you can do about it with the exception of NOT APPLYING to those schools. The other thing you can do is copy/paste a recent photo of Tom Cruise into your CV --- just for fun.

Because, in most of Asia, it's easier to get a job if you're Aryan & beautiful, regardless of qualifications/experince.

Sad but true.

It's just a common requirement in MOST Of the world - I wouldn't read too much into it. And I don't see too much wrong with it. It is interesting to see if someone is with it enough to put together a decent and appropriate photo.

There are, of course, countries and employers, who use it to discriminate - but you don't want to work for those flaky folks anyway.

I am male and 55, and I DO hope an employer looking for bouncy perky 20-something female for their kindy classes WILL discriminate and not even bother to call me . . .

The photo, to me, is just another measure of appropriateness. I've seen resumes where the contact email for a potential kindy teacher was - and I kid you not - something like: HotSe*[email protected]

And, I've also seen resume photos of people who are obviously drunk, half undressed and on and on. Personally - I think they help you pick who you want.

I know photos are non-PC, but I've lived overseas since 1989 and don't care about PC.

I haven't really ever worked in a country where a photo was a general requirement at the application stage. (Though once hired I have shared photos with the new boss, in order to help her know who to look for at the airport.)

I understand that it can help with appropriacy. But it also gives the school the potential to discriminate according to colour, age, attractiveness, or whatever.

I have never requested photos as part of the application process. But I do go into some detail in correspondence about appropriacy issues that matter in our local market, such as visible tatoos, non-traditional piercings, and "radical" hairstyles.

best,
Justin

I think it is EXCELLENT how you have managed it - but most employers are not so sophisticated as you are.

A college I worked at in Korea hired a teacher (this was 1993) based on a VERY strong resume and experience. She was, in fact, a GREAT teacher.

But - the school never mentioned that we had six-story buildings with offices on the lower floors and classrooms on the higher floors - set on hill sides . . . Ten minutes between classes, finish a class - down six floors, down the hill, up a hill, up five or six floors - even though I was fairly fit - I was breathing quite hard by the time I got to my next class - probably a couple minutes late.

Enter dear Beth (I forgot her name - we'll call her Beth). They didn't tell her this and it turned out she was about 300 pounds - on a light day. Beth had quit her college job in the States, sold her house and furnishings - and headed out for a life overseas. Needless to say - she didn't work out at the college. She couldn't get to her classes.

Now, I understand what they SHOULD have done before AND after they hired her. But these things tend to not be done overseas.

I suspect a photo - which wasn't with her resume, though it was requested - would have prevented a major financial and personal problem in her life.

You guys have made some valid points in favor of asking for a photo

and I might be a little paranoid about the potential for misuse.

I feel better now that I got that off my chest.

Time to shake body and make funny. Laughing

I find that shaking my body isn't as funny as it was when I had a 29 inch waist...

Crying or Very sad

Justin

PS- I've still run into "surprises" on the hiring front. There are things that our local partner schools take for granted when hiring, that I can't be too sure of...

Yes, throughout Asia photos are routinely required in job applications: for natives and foreigners alike. Fair or not, it's just a fact of HR there.

This is an excellent illustration of why basing your assessment of an individual on a photo is a bad idea.

Indeed, your co-worker was both large and out of shape. But one is not inextricably linked to the other. I am a large woman myself and don't have any problems hiking up stairs. On the other hand, I have a slender friend who has anemia and a host of other non-life-threatening but energy-draining health issues. I could run laps around her, but if you judged us based on that one simplistic criterion, you'd hire the wrong person. Wink

A couple of years back, the higher-ups made us start asking for photos, so we do, but I've never not hired anyone based on their photo. The ones who send inappropriate photos usually have also sent an inappropriate resume. There's one photo I've kept on my computer for when I need a good laugh Laughing .

If applying for jobs in Latin America, its a good idea to put a small head shot in the upper right hand corner of the resume--that's standard practice here.
