JZer,

The deposit is usually two months rent. Rent depends on where you live. Hovels start at 5-6,000NT$ in the boondocks, real apartments can run close to 20,000NT$ in Taipei.

Two months rental deposit upfront plus the first months rent in advance - so generally you pay an amount equal to three months rent when you move in.

The good news is that most places come fully furnished and ready to move into. You just need your own cutlery, linens etc.

$2000-$3000 CDN should get you by until you start getting regular paychecks...there are a lot more expenses than you think of when you move here...ie. rent, scooter, cell phone, food, beer, other essentials that you won't think of until you need them...

I am not buying a scooter and I will be living with a friend until I get a job.

How long does it take to find a job?

Wow, that's a tough question. Depends a bit on the time of year and your qualifications, exactly what you are looking for, and how you present yourself.

You are teaching at a university in Korea, no? If so - check out the "Institutes" in Taiwan - no relation to the "Institutes" in Korea - in Taiwan they are two year colleges - there are at least 50 of them these days and they offer situations much preferable to language schools (IMO/IME). They run on the same school year as Western countries do.

For just any job - you should be able to line up something quickly if you present yourself well (I am assuming you do), but it may well be worth holding out of a junior college type job if you are arriving at the right time of year.

tedkarma,

Thanks for the advice but I am planning to work at an cram school. Not that I want to but with most universities teaching hours can be anytime. I am looking for a language school with a specific schedule so that I can pursue an M.A. in Taiwanese/Chinese Studies in Taipei. Of course as someone noted, I might still wind up in Mexico for a year. I have been asking questions about both places. If I don't find a decent job for Mexico, I will go to Taipei and try to earn an M.A.

Many buxibans hire more people right before the summer vacation as students will flood into the schools to study. Take a look at the school year - go and apply in person a few weeks before any major school break of a few weeks (except Chinese New Year) and you will probably maximize your opportunity.

As you probably know your income will be far better in Taiwan than in Mexico - but we don't do what we do only for income . . .
