The question has come up about what kind of shoes women wear while teaching in the Emirates. Probably depends on dress code but ladies, what would you say is more popular open toe shoes or closed toe shoes? My GF would never wear flip flops to work but she prefers sandals in the hot weather.

I wore nothing but sandals 365 days a year... for years...

I have never owned a pair of flip-flops though, nor are Birkenstocks professionally appropriate IMHO.

I wear "dressy" thongs or flip flops all the time -- leather, from Aldo or Nine West, usually. I think Birks are a bit casual, myself, but know teachers who wear them. If I need/want to 'dress up' more, I have several pairs of sandals with heels.
