I don't "contribute" nearly as much as I used to these days - - mainly because I'm on vacation so only check in for a few minutes every day or two. However, for the life of me, I can't figure out why there is so much snipping and sniping going on here at Dave's? New people come on asking about this or that and some yell at them: "Do a search!!" (although most of us know how horrible the search function is!). Others try to offer up advice (regardless if it's firsthand or secondhand knowledge) and their opponents quickly jump in and lambaste the advisors for one reason or another.

Is it the summer heat getting to you? Do you actually know the people you are bickering with? Would you act this way if you actually met the opposing poster face-to-face? If I were a "newbie" coming to this board, I'd certainly quickly abandon it after reading just a few of the recent threads. I'll admit, I have posted a negative message or two (or three?) but for some posters (and I'm not pointing fingers at any individual) it seems to be a daily exercise. I'm honestly curious to know: what prompts you to come here and type up a few responses that are sure to incite anger and backlash from one or more other posters here?

In a few weeks when the new semester starts, more people will begin working in China, they will stumble across Dave's and start asking questions. Then you will find less bickering, now a lot of people are on holidays, so there isn't many questions coming in. Although there is quite a lot of nonsense going on, the forum is still useful for newbies and for people who have been here for a while. Laughing

I think if one looks at the three threads in this forum that have been most recently locked, one can pretty much figure out what -- WHO -- the problem is. There is one poster whose condescending, know-it-all attitude enrages many others. He (?) practically invites flaming or "taking the p*ss", then complains that he's being bullied. Poor widdle diddums...

That said, I think a certain amount of snipping and sniping -- good phrase -- is to be expected on any BBS. I hope the newbies won't be too taken aback. Just take everything with a LARGE grain of salt.

Later... I take OP's point to be a call for a little more civility. Agreed.

Thanks for that post. A certain amount of irony or sarcasm is to be expected but I was shocked at the conduct of some posters when I first arrived here - I reported two people within the first hour but gave up when I realized how frequently abuse was thrown around.

The Chinese are masters in showing respect compared to many posters on this board - it's apparently the FTs they've got to watch out for.
