Greetings all. I am a 25 year old in New York City leaving to take my CELTA in Cambridge, England in a few days. After much online research about teaching and living in Eastern Europe, I've narrowed down a few destinations I'd like to explore further.
Unfortunately, I've had a very difficult time finding out about the nit and grit of teaching in Croatia and Slovenia. Dave's Cafe, though a truly amazing resource, has no info whatsoever on these countries. My focus in Croatia would be the sunny coast and in Slovenia it would be the Julian Alps.
Does anyone have any experiences to share living and teaching in these areas? On one hand part of me likes the idea of exploring areas not many folks have been before but on the other sailing into a situation blind could lead to more hassles than it would be worth. (I guess this means that unless I can get some solid info on Croatia and/or Slovenia, I'll head to the Czech Republic regardless of its relatively low salaries.)
Thanks so much!

Well Slovenia will soon be EU which will probably mean getting paid in euro. Better hurry if you're not a European. The people are very friendly. They also speak damn good English so I wonder how high the demand is for outside teachers. The Croatian currency isn't as good obviously but the coast is pretty. I didn't like the people as much especially in really touristy areas(ie the coast) although Zagreb gets great marks from most on the atmosphere of the place and I met some really nice people there. This is strictly from a tourist point of view. Hope it helps. |

Just a comment.
I taught in Russia for five years. I met a few who spent some time in Croatia and Slovenia. there is work there and there are plenty of Croats adn Slovanians who dont speak good English; I met a lot in Moscow and in Berlin who were not good at it. If you have money go there and look for work it is the best way. if you dont have luck there....try Slovakia, or Romania......dont expect good money though. But the experience is worth it....East europe is by far better than Western Europe.....
