I had posted a message over 5 months ago and didn't have any luck receiving the information I was looking for, so I decided I would give it another shot.
I am again asking if anyone has any information about teaching positions and/or english schools in the Baja California. I am a certified TEFL teacher with little experience and hoping to find a job that will help expand my teaching experiences. I am aware that the place to be for teaching is in the south, but I am hoping to find something in Baja California so I can be close to my family members I have there. I speak spanish and have previously lived in mexico.
I am also wondering if a post-secondary degree is needed to teach english in mexico. I am 21 years old and have 2 years of post secondary education, but I do not have a degree.
Any information would be greatly appreciated!! |

The best answer seems to be that it depends on the local immigration office. If you look through previous threads on this subject, some folks have been able to obtain FM3s with only a TEFL certificate and no degree, yet some immigration offices require both a university degree and a certificate. (And of course, there is the possibility of working illegally, but I can't offer much advice there.) |

On what information are you basing this awareness?

Not necessarily. However, if you're not a Mexican citizen and want to work legally, some immigration offices may be reluctant to grant you a work visa if you don't have a university degree. |

I have been told numerous times that there aren't alot of teaching english jobs in the north of mexico due to the fact that the US is so close. Also, many english teachers have told me that it would best to start looking in the south (especially in the bigger cities) so, I assumed that meant there is a lack of jobs in the north of mexico. Have I been misinformed?? |

Maybe not. I don't know. Which bigger cities in the south did these English teachers suggest? |

English is widely spoken in the Baja plus they use US Dollars as currency rather than pesos in several areas. You would be better off almost anywhere else as far as opportunity, but it sure doesn't have to be in the south. |

I've been told that there's a lot of work in the northern cities, as there's more trade there with the US, so more demand for English ability. I haven't spent any time up there recently, so I can't say whether that's true or not.
Personally I'd recommend teaching in the southern part of Mexico, as (IMHO) it has had less influence from the US, and so is more "uniquely Mexican" in culture. |

I was just in Ensenada. I love that little town. On my way to the bus station to catch a bus north I passed by a language school I'd never noticed before. If I'd had more time I would have stopped. It looked very nice--more than just a store front, with a nice courtyard. I'm going to try to find it on the net. It got me to thinking about living there and teaching, which would be great since it's relatively close to where I live in the U.S. I love Baja. |

Check this place out. Especially if you are a native speaker of Spanish. This looks great! http://www.spanishschoolbaja.com/ |

Belmont, try the quote thing this way, so it doesn't look like you're quoting me as writing something I didn't write.

So, does this mean you're giving up your other screen name, Breanne? |

Well, it has been awhile since I have checked the replies to my post. Thanks to all those who replied because every little bit of information has helped. I am moving to Ensenada in 3 weeks and I am hoping that once I get there I will be able to find a job. In the meantime, I decided to volunteer working with children in orphanages with hopes that I will gain some valid experience that might help me in the future as a teacher. So, once again, if anyone stumbles across this post and has any information on ESL schools in Ensenada, I would love to hear it! |

I'm actually teaching in Ensenada right now, so if I hear of anything, I'll tell you. I've seen two language schools...one is the Cambridge English Institute and the other is Centro de Ingles (or something like that). I know Cambridge is for 7-12 year olds, and I'm not sure about the other one. If you want numbers let me know, and good luck! |

I'm so curious about where you are working. You don't have to give the exact location, but I'd like to know what you teach and how you like Ensenada, which is not too far from where I am here in SoCal (Long Beach). I like that little town. I'd like to work there, in fact. Anything you could share would be greatly appreciated. P.S. I don't need any help finding Hussongs. |
